African politics and Greek tragedy mixed in 'Antigone' Ancient Greek tragedies and modern African politics appear to be an unlikely combination, almost comparable toil and water. Antigone, running tonight through Sunday at North Carolina Central University, smooths out the differences between the two realms by setting Sophocles' classic tragedy in a small African village in 1971. "The Greeks had no monopoly on tragedy," explains director Michael Dixon. "Many of the contemporary world events are tragedies, unfortunately." "Besides, each production has a unique audience," continues Dixon. "What works at NCCU will not work in New York, and sometimes vice versa. An African Antigone will have a far greater impact on the NCCU audience than an ancient Greek version ever could."
