Friday, December 9, 1977 Weekender 7 Grad awards for all types of talent, skill By RAMONA JONES Staff Writer In her will, dated Nov. 14, 1934, Nellie Waddell Brenizer left the balance of her estate to the U niversity for the establishment of a graduate fellowship in history. According to the terms of the will, students receiving the Waddell Memorial Fellowship, established by Brenizer in memory of Lee R. Waddell, must choose the writing of history as a profession. Also, in awarding the fellowship, special preference is to be given to particularly promising undergraduates or to any person bearing the name Waddell. The Waddell Fellowship is one of several graduate awards given annually by the Graduate Fellowship Office with unusual terms regarding the recipients. Concerning the Waddell Fellowship, Terrv L.. Maddox. assistant for fellowships, noted, "In the last five years that I've been here, there have been no Waddells applying for the fellowship." Maddox said the Graduate Fellowship Office offers about 115 fellowships each year. The money for these awards comes from donations from alumni, proceeds from the UNC Student Stores and endowments such as the $1 1-million gift given to the University last year by the Joseph Pogue family. A portion of the Pogue endowment was given to the graduate school for fellowships. Among the more prominent awards given are' the Kent James Brown Award for a graduate student in Germanic languages, the Coker Fellowship for a graduate student in botany, and the Nicholson Fellowship for a graduate student in statistics. "Most fellowship recipients' receive between $3,000 and $4,000," Maddox said. Depending on the amount, the awards finance living allowances or living allowances plus tuition and fees. Graduate students may apply for many awards other than University fellowships, Maddox said. A copy of the "Annual Register of Grant Support" is kept in the Graduate Fellowship Office. "It has a good listing of familiar and unfamiliar grants," Maddox said. "Some are so restrictive, though, that you almost have to be tailor-made to qualify for the awards." He said that two or three years ago a student told him about a $1,000 award she had received from a group similar to the Daughters of the Confederacy. "The primary eligibility requirement," he said, "was to prove you were a direct descendant of a Confederate soldier." Maddox said another award is offered by the American Numismatic Society for post graduate study of the history of money or ancient coinage. "I don't know exactly what field you would apply that study to," he said, "unless maybe it was anthropology or something." Maddox suggested that students seeking aid might look for some of these awards offered by sources outside the University. He said many local, regional and fraternal awards are offered by organizations like the Lions Club, Rotary Club and Eastern Star. "The fellowships offered through the University are all given on the basis of academic achievement," Maddox said. "We do not look at need at all." All awards are based on departmental nomination. All-nominees must have been admitted officially to the graduate school before an award offer can be made. "We're competing with other schools for good students," Maddox said. "Every year we make more offers for awards than we have money for. We may offer as many as 50 percent more awards than we have money. These are offered, though, on the basis of the percentage of students we think will accept the fellowships." The fellowships that are not accepted are then awarded to other students on the list of nominations. "WHY DO THE HEATHEN RAGE? Psalms 2:1 and Acts 4:25 it "Ye that love the Lord hate evil! ...Take thou away from me the noise of thy songs; for I will not hear the melody of thy viols. But let judgment run down as waters, and righteousness as a mighty stream!" Psalm 7:10 and Amos 5:23 and 24. One may love the great hymns and music of the Church, but if one does not "hate evil" it appears God does not ap preciate the music, and it is unacceptable! Several years ago a minister of one of the oldest and best known Churches of the South began his sermon by asking his congregation if they ever thought of missing heaven after all, and facing an eternity in the "lake of fire." He said: "I do." Doubtless he was prepared to "Trust in The Lord with all his heart, and lean not unto his own understanding." Alter all, the professions of faith, the preaching, the teaching, the churchanity, the good will and opinions of fellow churchmen and good works in the sight of men then to miss heaven! This is no idle question just to frighten! Did not Jesus C hrist say In the Sermon on The Mount there would be many rejected who thought they were prepared? And in another place we are told that those who "rejected the truth and had pleasure in unrighteousness" that God Himself would send them a delusion tht they might believe a lie and be damned! "Let him that thinketh he standeth, take heed, lest he fall!" Someone has well said that many professed Christians take John 3:16: "For God so loved the world, etc." and use it as a bat to swat and bat and knock out of the way all other Scriptures in order to justify their 'love of the world, the flesh and the devil." Meditate a little on Christ's Temptation found in Matthew 4 and Luke 4 and see if He did not In effect tell the devil it is tempting God to take one Scriptural Truth to destroy another Scriptural Truth! "Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God." One of the auditors of the above preacher was much impressed by hearing such a question asked in such a setting, for so many ministers in our day openly and boldly reject the teaching of God s Word and Jesus Christ regarding eternal hell, or else take the perilous position that "that which is not talked about does not exist," and all this In spite ol their ordination vows! The late Sam Jones said that those who throw "hell fire" out ot their creed when they get to hell will have to adopt a creed in which there is nothing else but "hell fire." It is impossible to be a Christian acceptable to God and Christ without "denying self." He said so time and again, in the strongest of language. Should we not pray and Search The Scriptures in order to be fully persuaded in our own minds as to what is evil and ottensive to God, and seek the strength of God to "resist the devil" and bear such a witness that men will know where we stand on every moral and spiritual matter regarding "The Law and The Testimony."?
