The wealthy stand around, talk about basketball and munch on the shrimp. The North-South Doubleheader always is a big social event for the western North Carolina fans of Carolina and N.C. State, a chance for them to see their teams play some respectable basketball without a big chance of losing. But this year, the complexion of the Doubleheader changes. Carolina, State and Furman are joined this year by Virginia Tech, after Georgia Tech dropped the event from its schedule after last season. Virginia Tech comes into the Doubleheader this year with a 1 6-3 mark. The addition of Virginia Tech to the event's lineup, plus the fact that Furman defeated Clemson earlier this year, 87-68, puts the event into a new perspective. "It's not a warmup anymore," Tom Zaliagiris, who starts in the Tar Heel backcourt with Phil Ford, said this week. "We can't afford to try out new things." See CAROLINA on page 6. Sloan wary of 'outsiders' By EVAN APPEL Staff Writer Since basketball season began the calendars of many Carolina and N.C. State fans have had red circles around the dates Feb. 3 and 4. Originally, Tar Heel and Wolfpack supporters figured to spend a relaxing weekend in Charlotte, watching their teams cruise to easy victories. But while North Carolina basketball followers made plans for the weekend, the two other teams in the North-South Doubleheader, Virginia Tech and Furman, indicated they have different ideas. On Monday night, Virginia Tech upset I8th-ranked Syracuse, 87-71. Last week, Furman blew Clemson out of Death Valley, 87-68, to start the Tigers present three-game losing skid. N.C. State coach Norm Sloan didn't need the recent warning signs. He already knew what the two-day affair means to the two outsiders. "Since Virginia Tech is an independent, it's kind of like a national invitational tournament for them," Sloan said Tuesday , - " -:f" i A v u 1 i ' i j ' - ! i s 5 i -tf it j f 3 f jaw. 4 4 La 4 - rTf - WtMKHMUHk: rfthtt$.li v Towering Gefi Crompton in action against Clemson.
