in regional competition
GREENSBORO Five members of the
Daily Tar Heel staff won regional awards
Saturday in the 1977-78 Mark of Excellence
Contest sponsored by the Society of
Professional Journalists, Sigma Delta Chi.
The DTH received second place in the best
all-around newspaper category, finishing
behind the University of Maryland's
Diamondback.
Entries from North Carolina, Virginia,
Maryland and the District of Columbia were
judged in the contest.
The DTH swept the editorial writing
category, placing first, second and third. Ed
Rankin, former associate editor, won first
place for his editorial criticizing the lack of

desegregation at UNC. Elliott Potter, former
associate editor, finished third with an
editorial on Southern Bell's charging its
customers for city and county property taxes
and pocketing the revenue.
Nancy Hartis and Amy McRary won a
first-place award in the spot news category
for their story on a University Day rally by
the Black Student Movement protesting the
University's desegregation stand and the
Allen Bakke case.
Their story and Rankin's editorial will be
entered in national competition. The
winners will be announced in the fall.
The contest annually recognizes
outstanding student writers, editors,
broadcasters, cartoonists and
photographers.
The awards were presented Saturday at a
regional conference of SPJ, SDX. The
University of North Carolina chapter served
as co-host of the meeting along with the
Piedmont professional chapter.

The fourteenth annual Dental Students'
Conference on Research was held at the Carolina
Inn April 2-4. The conference, sponsored by the
American Dental Association and the Proctor and
Gamble Co., focused on informing dentistry
students of the employment opportunities
available in dental research.
I he national conference was attended by
student representatives from each of the 50 states
and each Canadian province, as well as by
students and faculty of the UNC School of
Dentistry. Expenses of the visiting students were
paid by Proctor and Gamble.
Among the guest speakers were Harvey W.
Lyon, secretary of the ADA Council on Dental
Research; Daniel Green, executive secretary of the
American Association of Dental Research; and
David Scott, director of the National Institute for
Dental Research.
The preceding weekend, the UNC School of
Dentistry held its third annual Student Table
Clinic Program. Approximately sixteen table
clinics involving the work of about 30 dental
students were displayed in the lobby of Brauer
Hall in the interest of informing visiting Dental
School Alumni of the latest techniques and
Activities of 'Greek Week'
to begin with litter pick-up
Teams of jersey-clad Greeks will be
on the streets of Chapel Hill picking up
trash from 3-5:30 p.m. today.
The event is the Chapel Hill Litter
Pick-Up, a part of Greek Week,
sponsored by the Interfraternity and
Panhellenic councils. Greeks will meet
in the Pit, divide into teams and go to
different areas of the community.
Nancy Aycock, projects director of
the Panhellenic Council, said the
purpose of Greek Week is to improve
Greek relations with the community, the
campus and within the Greek system
itself. "We're hoping to stress
cooperation of the members of the
volunteers
support student interests as determined by
research results.
Executive branch department heads stress
that all volunteers will be accepted.
Interested persons may apply to Suite C in
the Carolina Union.

Each i table clinic (a table-top demonstration ol a
technique or procedure in dentistry, research,
diagnosis, or treatment) was viewed by a panel of
judges which chose winners in nine categories.
Don Lane and Rick Alston won the American
Student Dental Association Preventive Dentistry
Award. Mel Kantor won the American Academy
of General Dentistry Award and the Dentsply (a
dental supply company) International Award. H is
project will be entered in the National Annual
Table Clinic at the ADA convention.
Gale Hester and Angela Finch won the $100
pri?e in the division of Clinical Sciences. Another
$100 went to Jeff Thomas, winner in the Basic
Sciences division. The $100 Graduate Award was
received by Robert M. Mason.
Winner of the $100 International College of
Dentistry Award was Jim Goble. Janice Sykes and
Patsy Coltrell won the Spurgeon Dental Auxiliary
Award of $25 each. The Dental Assistant Award
was given to Gina Garris and Janet Bridger.
Judges for the competition were Clarence
Sockwell. H. Garland Hershey and Mary C.
George, all of the UNC Dentistry School faculty:
James A. Harrell Sr., president of the N.C.
chapter of the Academy of General Dentistry; and
Sandra Madison, a senior dental student at UNC
and a winner in the competition last year.
