23rd straight ACC title Monday, April 24. 1978 The Daily Tar Heel 7 rCheerleading iiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiinniiiiiiiiiiiiiiin 4 Terps win track in landslide 1 Champion Carolina squad on television j v4 "K i I i DTHBilly Nwmn Hofstetter runner-up twice From staff and wire reports It was Ralph King's last ACC track meet and he went out in style, winning both the 1,500 meters and 5,000 meters. Along the way, King set one meet record while also winning the Robert A. Fetzer Award as the J meet's outstanding performer. , finished fourth in team standings with 78 " points, behind winner Maryland's 1822 points. For ' Maryland, it was the Terps 24th ACC track u championship in 25 tries. Second place went to N.C. State,, while Virginia finished third. King, UNC's only first place finisher, set a meet , i. ,;record in the 5,000 meters with a time of 14:03.18. In I the 1,500 meters, King's time was 3:48.1. King already , . . I has qualified for the NCAA s in both. I I i King earned the Fetzer Award on a 4-2 vote by J conference coaches. Maryland coach Frank Costello 1 did not vote, saying that the vote "was a bad decision" 1 and that a Maryland hurdler, Greg Robertson, should have won the award. I Robertson won the 400-meter intermediate hurdles in a meet record 50.8 seconds, upset freshman . - teammate Renaldo Nehemiah in the 110-meter high hurdles and ran the opening leg on both Terp relay squads. "How many other guys in this country can run, 13.6 ' and 50.8 and come back in the mile relay," Costello J asked. 1 ' The meet began Friday afternoon and by the end of I the day, Maryland was already far in front. UNC held I third place because of two second place finishes, one by I Jeff Gorski in the javelin (72.27 meters) and the other 1 by Gary Hofstetter in the 10,000 meters (30:14.7). ' v.. But on Saturday, UNC was unable to make a run at . i the leaders, falling to fourth place. "I was pleased with some of our performances," coach Joe Hilton said, "but with others I felt we should have done better. "Dave Robinson had a lot of trouble in the pole vault. He kept coming up short. The other vaulters were having trouble too, but it seemed Dave was having more than the rest. "In the high jump, Lee Shuler couldn't get his steps right. He had a good jump but he could have done better also. And of course we lost Don Lockerbie because of a calf injury. "If we had done better in any one of these we could have finished third." Lockerbie won the 800 meters at the ACC s last year. Shuler finished second in the high jump with a leap of 6 feet, 10 inches. The only other second-place finish was turned in by Gary Hofstetter in the 5,000 meters. His time was 14:10.57. Other top finishers for UNC were: High Jump - 4. Joey Toth, 6-8. Triple Jump 5. Spencer Wynne. 1 3.92 meters. 400 meters 5. Wayne Miller, 48.32. 1 10 meter hurdles - 6. Skip Miller, 14.7. 400 meter intermediate hurdles 5. Bob Walsh, 53.6. 5,000 meters 6. Jimmy Cooper, 14:40. 1 . 400 meter relay 4. UNC, 42.3. Mile relay - 4. UNC, 3:16.75. The Terps' 23rd straight ACC championship required balance in all the events and they scored points in all but one. Maryland was the strongest in the 1 00-meter dash and the triple jump, claiming 20 points in each. It received 18 points in the 110-meter high hurdles and the long jump and collected 16 in the pole vault. There was only one disappointment all day for the Terrapin team, that in the 400 meter relay where it had dominated in recent years. Andre Lancaster and Bob Calhoun fumbled the baton handoff going into the third leg, disqualifying the Terps. N.C. State went on to win the event. "We had expected to win over the 400 relay," Costello said, "and I was very disappointed with what happened. But we got our act together and came back." ciate Cheerleadinc Championships, taped earlier this month in Hollywood, Calif., and featuring the top-ranked squad from Carolina, will be televised at 8 tonight on CBS. The 90-minute special is hosted by Cheryl Ladd, George Burns, Phyllis George and Bruce Jenner. It was taped before an audience and a panel of judges which voted UNC first over squads from the universities of Florida, Kansas, Pittsburgh and Southern California. S Those five finalists were chosen on the basis of national rankings by the International Cheerleading Foundation and then were invited to Hollywood for the final competition. They were judged on cheers and chants, dancing and spectacle. The Tar Heel squad is led by Cathy McDowell and Chuck Day. s To earn an invitation to the national finals, Carolina prepared slides along with a videotape presentation and two scrapbooks of pictures. They were observed by judges at the Clemson football game and the Oregon State ; basketball game. illllllllllllllllllllll IIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIINIIIIHIIII HUH!
