Schutz said recently that, "1 would have sacrificed all of the other recommendations if only the four-course load would have been accepted. With the four-course load, students can do better work. It is a policy mistake for the University that , the curriculum disperses student energy as our present system does." The report stated, "The committee feels that shifting to a four-course load per semester. . .is educationally sound and advantageous. We believe it will enhance teaching, learning and the quality of the undergraduate degree. If a student can concentrate on four courses, rather than five, he should be able to attain better focus and depth." Justifications for the four-course load included that: Among schools structured on the two- candidates Ingram charged the publishing company's earlier poll as being "an out-and-out dirty trick to manipulate the I978 United States Senate primary election." Ingram said the current poll does not list the number of votes for each candidate, making it impossible to double check the poll's percentage estimates. jom oir Pemeue Stoot-Loej aafeaHlcfea zszn eiinnnnrov B tfalMlsatil5 WITH V1NJDMED PURCHMGS OH2dTUSlk PRICCo Ont validation with each purcrtait ol: a regular loot-long sub a dbl. maat loot-long sub a dbl. maat snak izt sub. Draft beer is available. four - course committee semester calendar, the general trend is toward four .. courses per semester. f Undergraduates who take 100-level courses are put at a disadvantage with graduate students who are expected to take only four courses. The university has a reasonably select, able and responsible student body which can be expected, and, therefore, should be encouraged to work intensively. The shift from five to four courses would not be a net reduction in effort on the part of students or faculty. It can reduce the total number of courses, braking expensive and sometimes needless course proliferation. "Some of the faculty thought it would be an actual reduction in educational effort or feared it would be seen that way," Schutz said. "It was difficult to persuade them that the issue was quality versus quantity. "It is my belief that we should shape the college Continued from page 1. Smith said Monday he believes Hodges' campaign has "run out of steam" because the former Charlotte banker has continued to waffle on the issues. "The poll shows that (incumbent Republican U.S. Sen.) Jesse Helms can be defeated and that Mr. Hodges' engine has run out of steam," Smith said. "This race is still very fluid." parking CoTaff,"om The solution to the parkingshortage, according to the memo, is a park-ride system. There is now a park-ride lot at Kroger Plaa. Cars are parked at the plaza and a bus carries passengers to UNC. "We don't know what people will do in the future for parking," Rachel Windham, assistant to Temple, said Monday. "When the situation gets bad enough that people have nowhere else to go, they will have to use the park-ride system. CHART YOUR OWN COURSE L. Schutz said that the time has come with a new dean, a new budget and an increase in student enrollment for the four-course load to be studied again. The main purpose should be to get improvement into the system and to get the student to do better. Schutz said. "The four-course load can be compared to listening to a stereo," Schutz said. "Instead of changing the channel from station to station, why don't we just sit down and listen to an entire album? I just wonder whether the undergraduate experience has any cohesiveness." FOR THE RECORD Groove Week The Daily Tar Heel incorrectly reported Friday that Groove Phi Groove fraternity currently is sponsoring its first Groove Week. 1978 Groove Week is the third such week. The article also reported that a party being held Friday at 9 p.m. as part of the week is free. Admission to the party is 50 cents. Political rally A story Monday on a political rally held Sunday afternoon at Ehringhaus field incorrectly reported that Luther Hodges Jr. had planned to attend the event, but canceled in favor of another engagement. In fact, Hodges did not have plans to attend. In addition, it was reported that McNeill Smith was the first speaker of the rally, when he actually spoke later in the afternoon.
