Y By LAURA ALEXANDKR Staff Writer Did you know that there is a program on campus for training teachers ol the disabled? Are you aware of the possibilities for furthering your education beyond college, even beyond graduate studies? Did you know about the broad range of topics covered in weekend seminars conducted throughout the school year? These programs and many others fall under the jurisdiction of the University Extension Division, housed on campus in Abemethy Hall. In operation in various forms since 191 1, this division includes three areas, the Credit and Certificate Programs, the Developmental Disabilities Training Institute and Continuing Education. Credit programs arethe Evening College. Independent Study by correspondence and Off-Campus Credit Courses. Disabilities Training provides programs for persons and institutions which help educate and train disabled persons. Continuing Education or non-credit programs include special interest courses, contract programs ; nd weekend seminars. The Evening College, in operation since 1958, offers many of the same courses available to the full-time college student, and generally is most useful for completing General College requirements. An Evening College student receives full residence credit for completed courses, but it usually is not possible to obtain a degree by this means. Classes parallel'those in the regular curriculum, and usually are taught by regular University faculty members. "We are examining the Evening College and reviewing student categories," says Paul F. Fendt, associate extension director. "We are trying to improve the image of the Evening College." One way to do this is to update advising, Fendt said. A full time adviser has been added to the staff to give academic and vocational guidance. A student participating in the part-time program is allowed to take one course during the day in conjunction with night classes. Cooperation in the area of day courses is increasing, Fendt says, as well as cooperation in acquiring instructors from the faculty to teach the night classes. If a regular faculty member is unavailable, however outsiders are employed to conduct courses. This fall, the Evening College will offer, classes in the following categories: anthropology, business, chemistry, classics, economics, English, French, geography, history, linguistics, mathematics, music, philosophy and political science. In addition, courses in psychology, sociology, Spanish, speech, and zoology will be taught. Tuition is based on the number of hours taken. The Independent Study program includes correspondence courses, television courses and credit by examination. The average cost for a three-semester-hour correspondence Special Introductory Offer to New Students course, including the cost of books and mailing, is approximately $100. A student can complete a course in a minimum of eight weeks says Fendt, but is allowed as long as 13 months to finish a course. Someone with family or job responsibilities might need that amount ol time to complete his assignments, Fendt says. Full residence credit may not be obtained through independent study, as only up to 30 hours of correspondence course credit may be applied to a college degree. The only standard ol every course is a required, supervised final exam, which may be administered by any accredited institution, such as a community college. I heexamsare scored by UNC faculty members. v The Independent Study office at Carolina administers the correspondence programs of Appalachian State, East Carolina. N.C. State. UNC at Ashevillc and UNC" at Greensboro as well as that here at UNC-CH. The correspondence courses offered at all six of these institutions are cross-listed in the Independent Study Manual available at Abemethy. , Off-Campus credit courses re mainly for the purpose of helping adults update their training when requirements lor employment in their field have changed. Consisting primarily of graduate studies, these courses are taught somewhere within the state by UNC faculty members whenever a iarge enough group of people is in need of training in a certain field. A recent innovation in the Off-Campus program is the addition of field-based masters programs, regular departmental graduate studies administered by the Off-Campus portion of the Extension Division. Fendt says that, considering the strength of UNC graduate programs, he feels it important to offer them on an off-campus basis.
