Q Tha Dally Tar Heel Monday. August 28. 1978 Heels hold first scrimmage ;iveii a fcaiice at wide receiver ? - - i -x By PETE MITCHELL Assistant Sports Editor All it took was a call, from the hometown newspaper and a' quick assessment of athletic ability and suddenly, PJ. Gay was running pass patterns instead of taking snaps from center in the Tar Heels first fall scrimmage Saturday. "The sports editor of the Sanford paper called me up and told me P J. played some wide receiver in high school," head coach Dick Crum said. He said he" would have been even more highly recruited if he had stayed there. 1 didn't know that. But he's too good a player to be sitting on the bench. He's got tremendous athletic ability and we'd be wasting his talent if we kept him at quarterback." So instead of running the third-team offense with quarterbacks Matt Ku pec and Clyde Christensen ahead of him. Gay has a good chance to start at wide receiver his junior year. "I think it's the best thing for me," Gay said. "The chances were all there for me at quarterback and if I wanted to 1 could go back to it. But changing positions is probably best for me." Gay seemed destined to quarterback Carolina after graduating from Sanford High in 1975. He was impressive as a freshman on the J.V, squad, but was hurt and lost for the year in 1976. Last year he backed up Kupec and was expected to do the same this year. Crum decided not to waste him when Christensen proved to- a more-than-adequate second-stringer. "He'll (Gay) play a lot this year and could very well start," Crum remarked. According to Gay, his new position is not that hard to learn but it requires the body to be a different kind of shape. "I have to work a lot on my footwork and taking long strides which is different from the quarterbacks. I haven't done any blocking in awhile, either," he said. "It's different, but it's not all that rough. The position won't make it for me', I'll have to make it myself." Crum was so pleased with Saturday's scrimmage in Kenan that he gave the team the rest of the day as well as Sunday off. "We're coming along in good shape," he told his players. "It's the bits and pieces we have to work on." It was the fifth day in pads for the Tar Heels, who are shooting for their Sept. 16 opener against East Carolina. So far, defensive tackle Mike Argo has sustained the only serious injury. The 6-foot-2, 233 pound junior broke his arm last Tuesday and will probably miss the entire season. Argo was the No. 1 backup at defensive tackly. Defense dominated the 2V2 hour scrimmage with the first unit giving up very little ground. T.K. McDaniels, Ken Sheets, D onnell Thompson, Dave Simmons and Bunn Rhames' were unmovable on the line. Linebackers Buddy Curry and Rick Downs found their way into the backfield more than once and the defensive secondary with Ricky Barden, Bobby Cale, Francis Winters and Bernie Menapace was; especially stingy. After battling them all morning Gay said he thought this year's defense would be even better than last year's, which led the nation. On offense, Crum feels "everyone is pushing everyone else." Running back Billy Johnson is down to 230 and after Ken Mack's halfback position along with Doug Paschall. Jim Rouse, Carey Casey, Delbery Powell, Wayne Tucker and Gay are competing for the flanker and wide receiver slots: s P.J. Gay (15): "I think it's the best thing for me.
