Pig Picking Auction Saturday Three whole pigs will be on the griddle, Bland Simpson will provide the entertainment and Phil Ford's practice jersey will be up for auction Saturday when the N.C. Civil Liberties Union holds its third annual Auction and Pig Pickin' at the Community Church on Purefoy Road. The auction, starting at 2 p.m., also will feature a 10-speed bicycle, a 10-course dinner for six with 10 wines at the Avanti Gardens Restaurant,' books, records, prints, pottery and the services.of a stud horse at Cullowhee Springs. Bland Simpson, co-author of the music for the Chapel Hill-to-Broadway musical Diamond Studs, will start the musical entertainment at 5 p.m., when the pig pickin' begins with three pigs, corn bread, slaw, desserts and vegetarian dinners. Beer, hot pretzels and other snacks will be available all afternoon. The Community Church, at Purefoy and Mason Farm roads, is behind Odom Village apartments on South Campus. wwmm 1 V5f i wt p -i Music from Star Wars will highlight the "Pops" concert presented by the North Carolina Symphony at 5:30 p.m. Sunday in the Forest Theatre. 1 The "Suite from Star Wars11 by composer John. Williams, which will conclude the performance, is one of the most popular movie scores ever written and was performed in the movie by the London Philharmonic. Other selections to be played include "Overture" to Die Fledermaus by Strauss, An American in Paris by Gershwin, "Waltz" from Swan Lake by Tchaikovsky and "Sabre Dance" from the Gayne Ballet by Khatchaturian. James Ogle, associate conductor of the Symphony, will conduct the "Pops." A graduate of the University of Michigan, Ogle opens this season as associate conductor, after having served four years as its assistant condutor. ." r Admission is free.- Craftsmen gather Bland Simpson D urnam r air More than 200 craftsworkers and exhibitors from throughout the state will line the streets of downtown Durham 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday, as part of the Fifth Annual Street Arts Celebration. Continuous musical entertainment will be presented on two main stages, with the music ranging from blues and jazz to classical. , Exotic foods, including tacos, egg rolls, falafels and natural foods, as well as traditional festival foods like ham biscuits and hot dogs will be available. Activities for children include construction of a fantasy" village, face painting, mural painting and a video theatre. Adults will be able, to help create giant metal and clay sculptures. .
