Frozen corpse found after 6 years
JAMESTOWN (AP) Movers clearing an uninhabited apartment of
furniture and appliances Wednesday followed a strange odor to a freezer and
found the body of a woman who authorities say may have been frozen there six
years ago.
The unidentified corpse was discovered in an apartment rented by a tenant
who apparently never moved in and who paid the rent by mail, Guilford
County police detectives said. The rent stopped coming, -and the apartment was
being cleared as part of an eviction proceeding.
Separated twins face uphill fight
DURHAM (AP) Siamese twins Sonya and Tonya Bain were separated
Thursday by a team of surgeons at the Duke University Medical Center, but
doctors said the infants were in unstable condition and faced an uphill fight.
Doctors had said earlier there was a 90 percent chance that at least one of the
infants, joined from the chest to the navel at birth, would not survive.
A team of four surgeons and five resident doctors separated the twins at 2:40
p.m. after taking more than two hours to divide their shared liver and then their
hearts, which were connected at birth.
U.S. probes Rockinham sheriff
WENTWORTH (AP) Rockingham County officials say federal
authorities are probing the sheriffs office to determine whether all fines and
court fees collected by deputies have been turned over to the county treasury.
County finance officer Glenn Powell said the FBI has subpoenaed financial
records kept by the sheriffs office in 1976 and 1977 in the probe, which centers
around Sheriff Carl Axsom.
In addition, an Internal Revenue Service agent questioned Axsom and
Deputy Leatruc Early on Wednesday about the records obtained by the FBI
and similar records for this year. Early has worked for Axsom all the 24 years he
has been in office and keeps the financial records.
No indictments have resulted from the probe, and authorities have said that
the FBI is not ready to present its evidence to a grand jury. The FBI is seeking to
crack a network of prostitution and gambling houses along major trucking
routes extending from Danville, Va.
Two Americans share Nobel for medicine
STOCKHOLM, Sweden (AP) Two Americans and a Swiss won the Nobel
Prize for medicine Thursday for their discovery of a method for breaking apart
genetic material that may eventually unblock some of the mysteries of cancer
and hereditary diseases.
The winners, chosen by the Nobel Committee of Sweden's Karolinska
Institute of Medicine, are microbiologists Daniel Nathans and Hamilton Smith
of Johns Hopkins University Medical School in Baltimore and Werner Arber
of the University of Basel, Switzerland. The three, who will share the $165,000
award, were chosen from among 205 candidates.
The awards put the United States well on the way to dominating the Nobel
Prize list this year. The only other award announced so far, for literature, went
to Yiddish author Isaac Bashevis Singer, a New Yorker.
House signals 'yes9 to GOP tax bill
WASHINGTON (AP) Over the objections of Democratic leaders, the
House unexpectedly embraced on Thursday a Republican-backed effort to
slash federal income taxes in 1980 and beyond.
By a 268-135 vote, the House told its tax bill negotiators it favored the long
term tax cut concept contained in a Senate proposal sponsored by Sen. Sam
Nunn, D-Ga., and supported by' Republicans. " 1 l,i -
That plan would expand the 1979 tax cut bill to include $164.5 billion In
additional reductions in 1980 through 1983. The cuts are conditioned on
holding down government spending and balancing the federal budget during
that period.

Egypt?
Israel begin treaty to&s Mclera
WASHINGTON (AP) Egypt and
Israel began negotiations Thursday to
draw up a peace treaty that President
Carter said ultimately must be broadened
to include all Arab parties to the Middle
East conflict.
"The United States is committed,
without reservation, to seeing this process
through until each party is at peace with
all the others" Carter said at an opening
ceremony at the White House.
Delegates from the two countries then
walked side by side across Pennsylvania
Avenue to Blair House where, in a
, second-floor library, they started to
explore terms for a treaty between the
Jewish state and the most populous of its
Arab neighbors.
At the first'session, lasting 1 5 minutes,
working procedures were established for
the talks, which are expected to last for up
to two weeks.
Then Secretary of State Cyrus Vance
and other U.S. officials met with the
Israeli delegation. After lunch, a separate
U.S.-Egyptian meeting was set up. with
the three sides getting together again in
late afternoon.
, The hope is that a treaty can be
.completed within two months. An even
more optimistic target is Nov. 19, the first
anniversary of Egyptian President Anwar
Sadat's breakthrough visit to Jerusalem.
The negotiations, growing but of last
month's Camp David accords, deal with
details of Israeli. withdrawal from the
Sinai Desert, security arrangements and
an exchange of ambassadors.
Much of the Arab world has
condemned Sadat for what could turn
out to be a separate peace with Israel.
Carter also has felt the sting of criticism.
In his welcoming remarks, the
president therefore underscored a
commitment to a comprehensive
settlement and to the welfare of
Palestinian Arabs living under Israeli
control.
The goal, Carter said, is "to make peace
and dignity a reality for all the people of
the Middle East." He invited Jordan, and
the Palestinians living on the West Bank
of the Jordan River and in Gaza to join
the peace process.
The alternative. Carter said, is drift,
stalemate, eternal emnity and perhaps
even another war."
M oshe - Dayan, the Israeli foreign
minister, stood to the president's right,
facing rows of Israeli, Egyptian and
American officials and diplomats who
have been involved In the long search for
a settlement.
To Carter's left in the East Room stood
Kamal Hassan Ali, the new Egyptian
defense minister in Sadat's reshuffled
government. Behind them were the
American, Israeli, Egyptian and United
Nations flags.
Dayan; speaking briefly, said Israel
hopes the way is now clear for concluding
a peace treaty. There were no apparent
political messages in the former general's
remarks.
But Ali underscored need for "a

Hot? vould Einstein

Although the O'Keefe formula is secret, certain factors in the
equation are well known: ..
1 . O Keefe has a hearty, full-bodied flavor.
2. It is smooth and easy going down.
3. Its head commands respect.
Our theory is that Einstein would have concluded: 'soo good to

comprehensive peace which ensures the
fulfillrnent of the legitimate rights of the
Palestinian people and enables them to
play a constructive role in a peaceful
Middle East.' ' '
He said the 40 million Egyptian people
hope the two frameworks constructed at
Camp David - one setting up peace with
Israel and the other negotiations over the
future of the West Bank and Gaza - "will
serve as a solid foundation for a
comprehensive peace to be built in good
faith by all parties."
By maintaining a conspicuous U.S.
role and holding the Egyptian-Israeli
peace talks in Washington, , the
administration intends to demonstrate an
interest in ending the Mideast conflict on
all fronts.
Specifically, it would like to draw
Jordan and Palestinian" Arabs into
negotiations with Egypt and Israel to
complete the framework for the West
Bank and Gaza. On this point, the
administration so far has not succeeded.
