But if smooth sophomore Jeff Lamp and his mates can improve each game and the Cavs can find a replacement for Marc lavaroni's board work the Wahoos might make a run for the title. by BILL FIELDS Will the Virginia Cavaliers play well for an entire year, not just in spurts? Will Jeff Lamp make Cavalier fans forget who Barry Parkhill was? - . Will University Hall fans actually see a fast break now and then? The answers to, those three questions might be yes, yes and yes, which would make coach Terry Holland, Jeff Lamp and all the Wahoos hoot and holler. If the answers are no, no and no, the three parties involved will do some crying instead. More than likely, though, the answers will be: perhaps, in time and probably, depending on those basketball intangibles no one can predict. Virginia was picked by ACC sportswriters and broadcasters to finish fifth in the league this season, which means that the media doesn't think Virginia can perform well wire-to-wire. Sports writers have been wrong before. Sophomore Lamp, a 6-foot-5 guard, averaged 1 7.3 points his rookie season and looks like the man who Holland will again need to pace the Cavaliers' scoring and get the big points when needed. Lamp was bothered by tendinitis in his ankles last season but if he's healthy the whole year, look out. Whether . he'll become as flashy and prolific a scorer as Parkhill was in the early 1970s is uncertain, but he has two things going for him: Lamp is almost identical to Parkhill in body build: he is already the darling of the Virginia crowds after just one year just like Parkhill was. And question three will Virginia consciously try to run the fast break more and become more than the ACC's lowest scoring team? "I think we'll be running a little more, getting the ball up and down the floor more," says Bobby Stokes, this year's team captain. Meanwhile, Holland said during preseason the point guard position, which Stokes plays, is not settled yet. "I just don't know how we'll handle the point guard situation," he said. "It's still somewhat a problem." The biggest problem Holland has, however, remains question one. Can Virginia play well the entire season? "One of our big strengths is that we've got players back who have competed in the ACC," Holland said. "I think we'll be a better team than last year." Lamp will start at big guard, with Stokes and senior Tommy Hicks fighting for the playmaker position. 6-3 freshman Jeff Jones will compete for backcourt playing time, along with returnees Garland Jefferson and Jeff Klein. At center, Holland lost Marc lavaroni, but has 6 9 Steve Castellan and 6-10 Otis Fulton, who is back after a year's absence. Freshman Peter MacBeth, also 6-9, will help out in the middle. Sophmore Lee Raker appears to have the small forward spot taken care of, with 6-6 Mike Owens" able to play the small spot if Virginia wants a big lineup. Otherwise. Owens should play the other forward position, with MacBeth, Fulton, Terry dates and Irosh Dean Carpenter behind him. Like any coach worth his pay, Terry Holland would like to be at the top of the ACC, not in the m iddle of the race. But the Cavs aren't likely to be in the cellar, either. If Holland's style of play patient, precise and cagy receives a few good bounces along the way, the Cavs could finish closer to the top.
