"I feel real good about the team," Gunnells said. "The two freshmen are coming on strong. I'm real excited." The women's squad lost the fall's No. 1 golfer, senior Bonnie Bell, from last year's state championship squad, and Gunnells must look toward some of her younger players to carry the team'. She said she is not worried about her squad, though, despit the lack of tournament experience in some of her top players and the fact, that only one senior returns this spring. The two freshmen are Carla Daniel and Jill Nesbitt. The women placed 1-2 in the squad's initial spring qualifying round for the Lady Paladin Invitational March 28 31 at Furman University. The freshmen both compiled 82.8 averages in fall competition, and Gunnells said she expects both girls to have outstanding spring success. The experience on the squad rests in the clubs of juniors Susan Cary, Stephanie Kornegay and Janet Haire. All three have been among the team's top five players the past two years. If Gunnells looks for team leadership, it comes from these three and senior Laura Strippel. But Cary must wait a while before she can begin spring competition. She fractured a bone in her right hand in a volleyball accident last Saturday, and the squad will lose her for at least two to three weeks. "I'm so psyched," Cary said. "The doctor said I could possibly play with a little fracture. I'll be out there as soon as possible." The other top players for the Tar Heels are junior Page Kennedy, sophomore Mareen Long and sophomore Cathy Graham. All three have been playing outstanding golf, Gunnells said, and she expects them to be on several traveling squads. Due to the lack of seniors on the team and the great balance within the top eight players, Gunnell said she believes her squad has developed a special relationship. - "We are a real unique team in the fact that each girl takes a part as a leader," she said. "We're a real close team." But the squad's greatest asset this spring, Gunnells said, is the great team depth. "I'm real excited about our balanced scoring. When all of them play well the same day, which they're capable of doing, we'll be tough." "Our first goal is to maintain the No. 1 0 ranking and move higher," she said. "We haven't had any one player win a .tournament in the past two seasons, buU as a team we have done real well. That's really our goal, to play well as a team." The Duke Invitational will be the young squad's first spring test, and the tournament should be a good indication of the Tar Heels' team strength. Tough competition in the 18-team tourney includes Georgia, Ohio State, Michigan State and Kentucky. "It's going to be a good tournament," Gunnells said. Hopefully we'll be in the top three." But Gunnells quickly added with a little more optimism, "Hopefully we'll win it." x Men swimmers start NCAAs; women tapped The Carolina men's swimming team is represented by seven swimmers today, Friday and Saturday at the NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships at Cleveland State University. Ken Ireland, a sophomore who won the 100 and 200-yard backstroke events at this year's ACC Championships, heads the Tar Heel contingent. Ireland currently holds the nation's best time in the 200 at 1:48.98. He is joined by junior co-captain Mike Amaya, who will swim the 100-yard breaststroke. David Hansen, Fritz Homans, Ireland and Amaya team up for the Heels' 400 yard medley relay team. Carolina's entry in the 800-yard freestyle relay includes Bob Omainsky, Clay Gilbert, Ireland and Homans. UNCs final entry in the championships is in the 400-yard freestyle relay team and includes Terry Jones, Hansen, Homans and Ireland.. "I expect we'll see some spectacular performances," UNC coach Frank Comfort said. - ' In other Tar Heel swim news, nine women swimmers earned All-America recognition after Carolina finished fifth last week in the AlAW Championshrps. Bonny Brown, Lauren Dupree, Barb Harris, Nancy Hudock, Betsy Hughes, Gina Layton, Ann Marshall, Cindy Shirey and Nancy Thompson received the nod after placing in the top 12 in an individual or relay event. Brown, a junior co-captain, led the way by finishing in the top five in three individual events and competing in four relays. Brown has been named an All-American each of her three years at Carolina. Hudock placed sixth in the 200-yard freestyle and eighth in the 500-yard distance. Layton's best performance came in the 200 yard backstroke, where she finished sixth. Harris grabbed sixth in the 50-yard butterfly and eighth in the 100-yard freestyle. Layton, Shirey, Harris and Brown teamed to finish runner-up in the 200-yard medley in an ACC-record time of 1:45.52.
