UI i Ui Former Carolina goll coach Mike McLeod died Saturday morning in North Carolina Memorial Hospital of an apparent heart failure: He was 59. A native of Sanford. McLeod coached the Tar Heels from 1973 1977. His teams finished in the top half of the conference in each of his four years at UNC. and McLeod's final season proved to be his finest. That year he guided the Heels to the Atlantic Coast Conference championship, snapping a 12-year Wake Forest winning streak. McLeod first came to Carolina in 1950 after retiring from the Air Force, where he earned his bachelors and law degrees. After graduation McLeod moved to Los Angeles where he worked as a tax attorney before returning to Chapel Hill to work at Finlev Oolf Course in 1967. At Finley. he served in several different capacities, including assistant golf coach, until hi$ appointment to the head coaching UNC Athletic Director Bill Cobey recalled that McLeod recruited many of the players that helped Carolina gain the national recognition it has had in recent years. "He (McLeod) was the man most responsible for building our golf program to the status it enjoys today," Cobey said. "His health bad been failing in the past few years and he showed great courage throughout those years." Former Tar Heel AU-ACC golfer John McGough, who played under the former coach, said, "1 owe more to Mike McLeod than I could every pay back. He was the epitome of guts and the will to live, and he never lost By NORMAN CANN ADA Staff W riler Carolina scored a goal in each half and played a tenacious defense game to take a 2-1 soccer victory over UNC-Charlotte Saturday at Fetzer Field in the season opener for both squads. - "I was really pleased with our play, particularly the first 20 minutes," Tar Heel coach Anson Dorrance said. "This is the best offensive attack we've had this early in the season." Carolina controlled much of the action in the first half but failed to get on the board until freshman John Boettigheimer came off the bench to score off a pass from Larry Tack as. LOCK ALL DOORS AND WINDOWS Boettigheimer continued to dazzle the 49ers with his offense, coming up with several narrow misses in the first and second half. "John had a great game," Dorrance said of the Richardson, Texas, freshman. "When he moves with the ball he's like a bullet." After intermission, the Tar Heels" wasted little time getting their second goal. With 34:04 remaining in the contest, Ricky Marvin took advantage of a penalty kick for Carolina's only other score. UNC-Charlotte matched that goal 15 minutes later when Fernando Sosa hit on a penalty kick of his own. That proved to be the 49ers' lone goal, though, as the Tar Heel defense held the visitors most of the afternoon. Dorrance said although the Heels did not score many goals, he was "very excited" about his team's offensive play. "We had a heck of a lot of scoring opportunities and some of the best offensive movement I've seen," he said. "If we can continue to play this way, we'll be able to score more and more goals." In addition to the play of Boettigheimer, the Tar Heel coach said he was also happy with the performance of sophomore Steve Turner. "He just played total soccer offensively and defensively," Dorrance said. "I'm real exicted about his future." Carolina returns to Fetzer Field at 4 p.m Wednesday for a match with a Belmont Abbey team, winless against UNC in 18 previous encounters. "They were pretty strong last year," Dorrance said. "But their coach left and took some of the players, so 1 don't know how strong they'll be."
