f Pegs 10 Weekender Thursday, October 4, 1979 Play makers open season , offer special student rates The Playmakers Repertory Company, UNC's resident professional theater group, will open its 1979-80 season at 8 tonight with a production of John Steinbeck's Of Mice and Men. The prize-winning drama revolves around the lives of two migrant farm workers on the Salivas River in California, George Melton and Lennie Small. Lennie is a huge, powerful man, but he is simple-minded and helpless. George has become his guardian and friend in order to protect him from harm, or from harming others. During their brief stay atone ranch, the two men try to fit in; yet they share a dream of having a small farm of their own, where no one can give them orders and where George can be free from ridicule. - John Steinbeck was born in. Salivas, Calif., and has gained fame for his portrayals of the poor farm laborers of the region. He first attained recognition in 1935 with his book, Tortilla Flat, a story of Mexican Americans. In 1937, Of Mice and Men was published, and its film version won the Drama Critic's Circle Award that year.' Also his Crapes of Wrath (1939) won the Pulitzer Prize. In PRC's production, Kent Broadhurst p!ays George. He Has recently been filming a role in Brubaker with Robert Redford. He has also worked for PBS, other regional theaters and in TV soap operas. With this production, Lanny Flaherty plays Lennie in Of Mice and Men for the third time. He has performed in other regional theaters as well as on Broadway. He spent the summer in VVaterford, Conn, at the O'Neill Center's National Playwrights Conference where he met the play's director, UNC drama department chairman Arthur Housman. Housman, the founder and executive director of PRC, directed PRC's production of The Crucible in 1976. Students will have a special opportunity to see Of Mice and Men at 10 a.m. Friday, Oct. 12 and Friday, Oct. 19, performances that will include after-performance discussions. Other performances are at 8 p.m. Tuesdays through Saturdays and at 2 and 8 p.m. Sundays through Oct. 21.
