Tuesday, December 4, 1979 The Datyl BUJ 'Carolina, State wouneii' renew hoop rivalry By MAR JO RANKIN Staff Writer It's that time of the year again. The traditional Carolina-State rivalry flares up tonight with the women's basketball team traveling to Raleigh to face the Wolfpack at 7:30. N.C. State, ranked No. 5 nationally, is in its usual winning form, with five wins against no losses. Two of those wins have come against Top-20 teams. The Pack downed Mississippi two weeks ago and Penn State Saturday. The Tar Heels have. also gotten off to a good start, but their four-game winning streak was snapped Saturday in Carmichael Auditorium when fourth-ranked Tennessee took an U -point win. Carolina also beat Ole Miss on the Rebels' recent jaunt through the Triangle area. ,.,' UNC coach Jennifer Alley said she expected the Wolfpack team to be different from, although as strong as, teams in the past. -From what I've heard and read, they've basically changed their offensive and defensive strategy from last year," Alley said. "They run a free lance passing game and fast break on every opportunity." "," She said the Wolfpack has gone to a man-to-man defense more this year after being primarily a zone team in the past. Wolfpack coach Kay Yow said she is pleased with the overall progress of her team at this point but added that the Pack has had problems with its transition game. , n. . . "We've been sloppy at times in our transition game," Yow said. She said the Pack hacfplayed good half-court offense and good half-court defense but it has trouble going from one to the other smoothly. "We've had more turnovers than we'd like," Yow said, but at times we've run with the ball and are therefore susceptible to turnovers." The Tar Heels will face basically the same starting lineup N .C. State put on the court last year, with one exception. Sharp shooting guard Ginger Rouse will not be in the starting lineup because of a back injury, and will be replaced by lightning-quick freshman Angie Armstrong. The remaining starters are no strangers to the Tar Heels. Senior center Genia Beasley continues to be a driving force in the Wolfpack success. The 1978 Kodak Ail-American played on the U.S. team that won the gold medal in the World University Games last summer and averages 1 3 points in the Pack's first five games.
