Monday. January 21. 19S0 The Daily Tar Heel 5 b-ba TUNC wrestlers surprise Pack 11 e 9 From page 1 s. i than four points. But Carolina started missing while Maryland kept hitting, and the Terps drew out from a three-point advantage to nine in six minutes to lead 40-31 at halftime. "They spread us out late in the first half, and we chose to chase." Smith said. "That was a gamble on our part." Carolina couldn't dent the lead until the 9:29 mark of the second half when a Jimmy BrajJdock jumper from the top of the key started the Heels on a spree to within three points at 60-57. But Driesell called time, and Maryland came out to score 10 straight points, putting the game out of reach with 4:52 left. During the 10-point Maryland run, Carolina's James Worthy drove into the key around the Terps' Graham but slipped and broke two bones above his right ankle. Worthy is out for the rest of the year. Carolina was able to get within as few as six points only in the final 29 seconds. The loss drops Carolina to 10-4, 4-3 in the ACC. Maryland remains in the league lead at 5-1 and is 12-2 overall. I wouldn't say (we're in control of the ACC race)," Driesell said. "We're just taking them one game at a time. The win today should help us along the way, but it does not make the season." "They're in good shape in the conference race," Smith said. The Tar Heels were without the services of guard Jimmy Black because of his mother's death Friday. h wiiii jiiiiiiiiiwiwHii i film-'' 'it liiiil1i'7Vi(iTr-"rTi-irt--rTiiirBii ii in in " "I DTH Andy James Albert King Terps 92, Heels 86 CAROLINA FQ FT R PF A TP MIN O Koren 12-22 0-0 5 5 3 24 36 Worthy 6-13 1-2 7 1 0 13 27 Wolf 1-2 0-1 4 2 2 2 9 Wood 6-15 5-8 7 5 1 17 34 Colescott 4-5 0-0 2 5 2 8 32 Yonakor 1-2 0-0 5 1 4 2 11 Budko 2-3 0-2 6 4 0 4 24 Braddock 3-6 2-2 0 3 1 8 8 Virgil 4-6 0-0 2 0 0 8 9 Pepper 0-2 0-0 1110 9 Kenny 0-0 0-0 0 0 0 0 1 Totals 39-76 8-15 40 27 14 86 200 Maryland FQ FT R PF A TP MIN King 12-16 4-4 8 2 7 28 37 Graham 5-8 7-10 5 5 4 15 38 Williams 6-9 7-10 4 5 1 19 39 Manning 8-9 0-0 3 1 0 16 38 Morley 0-1 0-0 0 0 0 0 6 Jackson 3-7 2-6 2 3 4 8 35 Baldwin 1-2 2-4 0 3 0 4 7 Total 35-52 22-34 26 19 16 92 200 North Carolina 31-5586 Maryland 40-5292 A 10,000 ABORTION The decision may well be difficult . . . but the abortion Itself doesn't have to be. State Friday night at Reynolds Coliseum. weekend roundup A late Wolf pack comeback had tied the match 18-18 going into the final match between Parry and State's Greg Steele. Parry's takedown gave him a 4-2 lead, and he held on for a 5-3 victory. Parry's clutch victory was set up two hours earlier when Carolina's Bob Monaghan upset Jim Zenz, ranked second in the nation, in a 15-6 major decision in the 1 18-pound class. Monaghan's victory gave the Tar Heels momentum, and they ran to a 12-0 lead behind decisions by Dave Cooke and CD. Mock. The Wolfpack then mounted a comeback with four victories around Carolina wins at 158 by Jan Michaels and at the 167 class by Carter Mario. State's three-time Atlantic Coast Conference champion Joe Lidowski's 7-5 win over Norman Walker tied the match at 18 and set the stage for Parry's win. The Tar Heels returned Saturday night to Carmichael Auditorium and defeated Old Dominion 30-1 1 for their fourth dual meet victory against no defeats. The meet was highlighted by Mock's 9-4 decision of nationally ranked Buddy Lee and Mario's second-period pin over three time Virginia state champion Arturo Holmes. UNC's next dual meet is against Duke at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday in Carmichael. The men's swim team had one of its best performances of the year Saturday as the Tar Heels defeated South Carolina, 65-48, while the Tar Heel women fell to USC in an upset,37-94, at Bowman Gray Pool.
