A night for staying awake:
Fun, games, food at Union
if
By PHIL WELLS
T
his is your only chance this year to
do it ail night in the Union.
The "it," co-sponsored by the
Carolina Union and Henderson
Residence College, will include
almost anything from a
performance by Chris Rush to roller
skating in the Great Hall; from
gambling at a casino to winning two
free ski rentals.
The "it" is the 3rd annual All
Nighter, which will begin Friday at 8
p.m. and end Saturday at 4 a.m.
Rush, a social satirist, combines
topics like those of comedy team
Cheech and Chong with the delivery
of Woody Allen for ' his comedy
routine. He originally was known for
his drug-oriented humor but has left
that behind for other social topics
such as politics, contraceptives and
puberty. Much of his comedy shows
his rebellion against his childhood
and his education by nuns in the
Dominican Republic. ,
Rush's first album, suitably titled
First Rush, caused him to, be
compared to Lenny Bruce, George
Carlin and Woody Allen. The album
never was a big seller for the simple
reason thats its language and topics
excluded any form of radio play.
Rush is a former contributor to
National Lampoon. One of his more
popular jokes in Lampoon shows a
breast that reads: "What's the
difference between Raid and
mother's milk? There's no DDT in
Raid."
Rush also has appeared on Saturday
Night Live and Don Kirshner's Rock
Concert. Nick Barrett, a local
musician, will perform with Rush.
Barrett plays the piano and guitar and
sings blues. Rush will perform at 9:30

from 8 p.m.-4 a.m. The cost will be 50

money. The cost to roller skate will be
75 cents an hour.
Those who venture to stay up all
night also will be able to play bingo in
North Gallery, have their fingers and
faces painted in South Gallery, have
their palms read, see films and
cartoons and compete in a
backgammon tournament.
Other all-night events will include
a lost key contest, bowling specials, a
chess challenge, a disco, a coffee
house and several prize drawings
throughout the night. Prizes will
include two free ski rentals, two
Purdy's memberships, a dinner for
two at Slug's a backgammon board.
Tickets will be available at each event
and at the center of the main lobby. T
shirts vith an All-Nighter logo will be
sold for S3.
The Union and HRC will split the
costs of the event, but all profits will
go toward' s HRC's portion of
Springfest. Last year, though, the
two groups barely broke even, said
Susan Strayhorn, HRC's social
lieutenant governor.
"Our goal is to prdvide students
With the event. If we make money,
that is good, but that isn't our
primary goal," Strayhorn said. The
Brice Street and Bonnie Gringo
bands have already signed contracts
to play at Henderson beach for the
annual event, she said. 0
