6 The Daily Tar Heel Thursday, January 24, 1980 Switching Co uiriEg arm ready for law career after Ibasketba' if- M By NORMAN CANNADA Staff Writer DURHAM There's no doubt Jack Marin enjoys a competitive atmosphere. Marin, 35, was an All-America basketball player for Duke in the mid-1960s. During three seasons in Durham, Marin led the Blue Devils to the Atlantic Coast Conference championship and NCAA Final Four twice. He went on to the National Basketball Association and enjoyed a . successful 1.1-year career with four professional clubs. Now Marin is attempting to switch courts, so to speak, and begin a new career as a trial lawyer. "I miss the competitiveness of basketball, and that's one reason I became interested in law," said Marin, a third-year student at Duke School of Law. A lawyer has very definite victories and defeats just like a basketball team." I'm particularly miffed at the Duke student body. They're usually counterproductive in what they do anyway. You just don't incite a guy like Mike O'Koren, because he'll turn it on you everytime. Jack Marin Marin played with the Blue Devils from 1963 1966, earning All-America mention once and All ACC honors twice. Duke advanced to the Final Four during his sophomore and senior seasons, but Marin remembers the second championship year better. "We had had a mediocre season at least for the way Duke had been playing at that time the year before (1965), and lost to State in the ACC finals. In 1966, we came back and put it all together." The 1 966 season was also the first year in which North Carolina Coach Dean Smith used the Four-Corners offense a lot in conference play. The Blue Devils got their biggest scare from the Tar Heels that year in the tournament finals as Smith's slow-down tactics resulted in a 21-20 Duke win. "They should have just called us ahead of time and said 4hey, we only want to play three-minute halves with you tonight,' and we could have set the clocks back for them," Marin said. "It was a good , tactic on Dean's part, but, if they had gone to the Eastern Regionals instead of us, it would have been a crime. We were a much superior team." " That low-scoring game is one reason Marin said he wants to see the 30-second clock introduced in college basketball. "Sometimes 1 can see holding the ball outside to get the other team to come out of its zone defense, but this deep freeze is just silly. You ask anybody in the NBA, and they'll tell you that 30 seconds is plenty of time to get a shot off. Marin was not the only Blue Devil to be named to an All-America team in 1966. Bob Verga, a year younger than Marin, also received national honors. Verga repeated as an All-America in 1967. "It was an interesting situation because the press didn't think that Verga and I got along. That wasn't true, but we didn't show a lot of emotion about it either." After he ended his Duke career Marin was drafted by the Baltimore Bullets in the fifth round of the pro draft. Marin played with the Bullets for six seasons and had his last five NBA years divided between Chicago, Buffalo and Houston. "The players were so much better in the NBA (than college, but 1 guess the most surprising thing I saw when 1 first got there was players smoking and drinking beer in the lockerroom. That seems to have somewhat ceased now, though." One of Marin's teammates in Baltimore was Gus Johnson, who was shattering backboards long before Philadelphia 76crV center Darryl Dawkins made the news for breaking two backboards earlier in this season. "Gus used to break two every year, and he could do it with one hand. It's kind of scary and a little miss the competitiveness of basketball, and that's one reason I became interested in law. A lawyer has very definite victories and defeats just like a basketball team. Jack Marin rough on the backboard, but I've never known anyone to get hurt from it. 1 think right now that Darryl just has a good publicity stunt." In addition to attending law school, Marin has worked on his golf game. His handicap fluctuates between three and scratch. "1 used to be obsessed with golf. Now I've made a couple of adjustments in my game, and I've found that 1 can improve my play as if I were playing everyday." Another hobby that occupies his time is a love for automobiles. At present, Marin owns a Datsua 280Z, a Maserati and two Cadillacs a convertible and a Seville. "I don't know why I like cars so much, but I've always wanted to own a lot of cars. I especially love, sports cars." Marin manages to see many of Duke's basketball games in Cameron Indoor Stadium, and says he sees several differences from his If 9 ' t V, A1 s - ) r "V 1 is Duitum Hm-ttt-SurVJtot Thornton Jack Marin drives during his Blua Devil playing days ...today (inset) he's a 35-year old law student collegiate years, especially in the behavior of Duke fans. "I'm particularly miffed at the Duke student body. They're usually counterproductive in what they do anyway. You just don't incite a guy like Mike O'Koren, .because he'll turn it on you every time." Marin views the balance of the ACC and the movement to more of an inside game as two of the biggest changes since his Duke playing days. "It used to be that if you were dominant, you were really dominant, but now any team can win on any given night. "There's also more of an inside game now, and that makes for better field goal percentages. If a player hits three, four, five or six shots from the outside, now he's considered hot, whereas eight, nine and 10 shots were considered hot in my day. The players now are more interested in getting the ball inside." Alton's Winter FfstfSTO THIS IS WHEN THE DEALS ARE RED HOT, & PRICES REALLY HIT BOTTOM, BOTTOM, BOTTOM!
