Swimmers
take second
By LINDA ROBERTSON
Staff Writer
The UNC men's swimming team close, but
not quite close enough to beating N.C. State in
the Atlantic Coast Conference meet.
Although the Tar Heels did not win, they
had the Wolfpack worried for the first time in
10 years. N.C. State scored 496 points to
UNCs 408 and third place Clemson's 305 to
win its 10th consecutive championship at
Carmichael Pool on the State campus.
On the first "day of competition, UNC
jumped out to a 3 1-point lead after the first two
events. State held just a 133-105; advantage
after the first round, prompting Pack coach
Don Easterling to say, "We came in a little
tight, and Carolina came in to swim."
Ken Ireland led Carolina swimmers with
three individual wins and two relay victories.
Ireland opened the meet with a win in the 500
free, two seconds ahead of teammate Bob
Omainsky.
The junior also successfully defended his
ACC championships in the 100 and 200 back,
and swam fast splits on his legs of the 400 and
800 free relays. Ireland qualified for the
national meet in the 200 back (1:49) and his
qualifying time of 50.61 in the 100 bettered the
old conference record of 50.67.
Freshman Roger Vredcveld was UNC's
other individual champion in the 200 I.M.
(1:52.94). He also placed second in the 100
back, third in the 200 back and swam the third
leg on the winning 800 free relay.
Dave Hansen anchored both winning relays
and took second and fifth in the 200 and 100
free, respectively ."We swam very well, but the
whole problem was the diving," Hansen said.
Jose De Jesus was second in the 200 I.M. and
raced to a national qualifying-time with his
second in the 400 I.M. Other highlights of the
meet included Arnaldo Perez's second in the
100 fly, Mike Amaya's third in the 100 breast,
Mark Welker's third in the 200 free, and Keith
Hoffman's third in the 200 breast.

had only nine points on 4-of-I3 shooting. The
Duke center fell midway through the first half
and hurt his back. From that point on,
Gminksi had trouble reaching for passes and
getting up and down the court quickly.
A key advantage for the Tar Heels was the
mismatch of Vince Taylor trying to guard
Virgil. Virgil, though only one inch taller than
the 6-5 Taylor, posted low early in the game
and got several baskets over the Duke guard.
Carolina finishes the regular season 20-6, 9

start, ends up 19-8, 7-7 in the league.

title meet
From Staff and Wire Reports
GREENSBORO Clemson gave Maryland a close call Saturday in
the Atlantic Coast Conference indoor track championships, but when all
events had been completed, the Terrapins owned their 25th straight
victory.
North Carolina, on the strength of a first-place finish by high jumper
Lee Shuler, came in third. Shuler's 7-1 effort was good enough to defeat
defending champion Mike Corbin of Maryland.
Shuler, who went to Western Guilford High School, missed on two
early attempts at 6-8, and failed to set a personal best of 7-2'2, but edged
Scott Wall of N.C. State for the win.
The Tar Heels finished with 60'4 points, well back of the Terrapins' 134
and Clemson's 104. Georgia Tech was next with 42'j followed by
Virginia, Duke and Wake Forest.
I can appreciate a tight meet as long as we win," Maryland coach
Frank Costello said. "We had to overcome some adversity, and Clemson
fought us to the .wire
Other top finishers for Carolina included Phil Farris, second in the 60
yard high hurdles; Kevin Lockerbie, second in the 1,000-yard run; Doug
Slack fourth in the mile run, and Jimmy Cooper, fourth in the 2-mile run.

Wrestlers finish unbeaten year
By GEOFFREY MOCK
Staff W riter
North Carolina paid tribute to five senior
wrestlers and then proceded to whip Georgia
Tech 32-12 Friday night in Carmichael
Auditorium to complete the most successsful
season in Tar Heel history.
In a brief pre-meet ceremony. UNC coach
Bill Lam praised Joe Galli, Carter Mario,
Arnold Warkins, Charlie Quaille and Norm
Walker as important factors in Carolina's rise
to national prominence in wrestling.
The seniors made the occasion memorable.
Galli, wrestling in the 142-pound class for only
the second time this year, won a 10-2 major
decision over Pat O'Bryan. Galli, who will
wrestle at 142 pounds in the Atlantic Coast
Conference tournament this Friday, said he
was first opposed to dropping to 142, but is
convinced now that he is a better wrestler at
that weight.
"I'm quicker and moves come easier,' Galli
said. MI didn't like the idea at first, but coach
Lam convinced me that it was for the best."
Galli's win followed pins by Dave Cooke
and C. D. Mock, giving the Tar Heels a 22-0
lead over the Jackets.
Decisions by freshman Pete Pierce and Jan
Michaels extended the lead to 28-0 before
Mario took to the mat against Rick Bortles in
the 167-pound calss. Mario was aggressive

omen cagers fall to State again
By MARJO RANKIN

RALEIGH N.C. State's women's basketball team extended a few of
its winning streaks Saturday night in the Raleigh Civic Center.
The Wolfpack won its fifth straight N.C. AIAW Tournament
championship.
It beat the Tar Heels for the 14th consecutive time in the process.
It extended head coach Kay Yow's state championship string to
seven five at N.C. State and two at Elon College.
The 81-59 rout was also the third time in UNC coach Jennifer Alley's
three years at Chapel Hill that N.C. State has beaten her team in the state
championship game. That's one string Alley would rather not think
about.
"I don't know what it takes to get motivated to play N.C. State," Alley
said. "I tried everything 1 know this week.... I was shocked; I didn't think
the fourth time around would be the same type of game as the first three."
The Pack soundly has beaten UNC 89-66, 85-68 and 90-63 this year.
The Tar Heels got to the championship game with an 83-59 win over
Duke in Friday's semi-final. That game saw UNCs freshman center
Henrietta Walls score 18 points, grab 12 rebounds, block four shots and
take three steals.
There was nothing strong or solid about UNC's performance

from the start, but Bortles was effective in
countering until Mario scored a takedown,
with 2 seconds left in the period. Mario went
on from there to win an easy 9-0 major
decision.
"Bortles was a strong wrestler," Mario said.
"We had all kinds of momentum and that
helped me."
Watkins and Walker wrestled well in losing
decisions. Wrestling at 177, Watkins fell
behind 8-2 and despite a strong third period he
could not threaten. Walker led 8-6, but was
reversed with 18 seconds left in he match and
lost 9-8 on riding time.
The win gave the Tar Heels a perfect 12-0
season find increased their win streak to 25
matches in a row. They noe have their sights set
on the ACC tourney which starts Friday in
Durham.
Lam has put the wrestlers through extra
workouts in the last month to prepare them for
the tourney. "We're in good shape," Lam said.
"Our first goal was to go undefeated, but that
won't mean much unless we can win the
conference."

Carolina edged the Bulldogs 4-3 on
Saturday and won 4-1 Sunday. A game
against UNC-Wilmington scheduled for
Friday was rained out.
On Saturday, a homer by Dwight Lowry to
lead off the second inning w as the key blow for
the Tar Heels. Mark Ochal, a junior college
transfer for Carolina, w as the w inning pitcher
with eight-inning relief help from James Parks.
Sunday, Shayne Hammond, a freshman
from Cerro Gordo, pitched a tw o-hit complete
game. Carolina got a run in the second, two in
the third and one in the seventh.
The Heels will go to High Point on
Wednesday before coming home to face Elon
on Thursday.
The UNC gymnastics team finished its
regular season Saturday with a victory over the
University of South Carolina and Georgia
College in a meet held at Columbia, S. C.
Carolina placed first, second and third in the
all-around standings. Diana Cates was first,
Tia Walker second and Tiffany Terranova
took third.
Cates and Walker were first in the vault
while Walker won the competition in the
balance beam. Cates was first in the uneven
bars and in the floor exercise while Terranova
finished second in the beam.
The win gives the Tar Heels a 9-1 dual
match record for the year. The gymnasts will
begin the state tournament on March 1.
Saturday, however. Walls got into early foul trouble and spent most of
the night watching the action from the bench. She finished with four
points. Shaffer was unable to match her shooting performance of the
previous night and missed all six field goal attempts. Her single point
came on a technical-foul free throw.
McGlade was the only consistent Tar Heel in the tournament, a factor
that led to her selection to the all-tournament team. She had 20 points
and 13 rebounds against the Wolfpack. Freshmen Kathy Crawford and
Deanna Thomas added 14 and 1 1 points.
After, the Pack jumped out to a 4-0 lead, UNC came back and played it
an even game for the next four minutes, pulling within two several times
UNC's Crawford hit a layup with 1 3:53 remaining in the first half to put
the Heels within two for the last time at 13-11.
From there the Pack scored 1 2 straight and held Carolina scoreless for
almost seven minutes. After taking a 39-21 halftime lead, the Pack came
out and scored 2 1 points in the first seven minutes of the second half while
holding the Tar Heels to a single free throw. With 1 3: 12 remaining in the
game, State held an invincible 60-22 lead.
Junior guard Aprille Shaffer also had a strong performance, scoring 16
points on 6-of-7 from the field and 4-of-4 free throws. Senior forward
Bernie McGlade came through with another solid performance with 10
points, 1 1 rebounds and six assists.
