Perkins to UNC
LATHAM, N.Y. (AP) Sam Perkins,
a 6-foot-9 center who escaped the slums
of New York City to find fame in this
Albany suburb, announced Saturday he
has accepted a basketball scholarship to
attend UNC next season.
The announcement ended months of
speculation over the destination of
Perkins, who in just two years,
established Himself as the best basketball
player in northeastern New York
scholastic history.
Perkins said he decided on Carolina -over
Duke. UCLA and Syracuse
mainly because of coach Dean Smith.
Perkins' high school coach Julius
Grimindl and his guardian Herb
Crossman had also favored UNC because
of Smith.
They told me about the man. I hadn't
really heard of him," Perkins said. "He's a
good guy. He knows the game. He's a
great person."
