Tuesday. April 22. 1980 The Daily Tar Heel 5 Mike Rob Carolina baseball coach keeps God, f amily as top priorities By DAVID POOLE Assistant Sports Editor First of three parts. The office below the Boshamer Stadium stands is little more than a glorified cubicle. There are so many file cabinets and paper baskets, that it seems a good breeding ground for them. The desk against the back wall is not large, not is it neat. Papers lie everywhere, but there is a strange sense of order in the middle of the mess. There are three things along the back wall that catch a visitor's eye when he walks in the door. The first is a window from which an air conditioner protrudes. Sitting on top of it is a picture of Jesus and a needlepoint rendition of a verse from the Bible. Just to the left and lower in the room Heels face Duke today The Atlantic Coast Conference baseball tournament begins today with the top four seeds playing host to the bottom four seeds in first round games. Top-seeded North Carolina will play Duke at 2 p.m. in Boshamer Stadium. In other games, runner-up Maryland will play Georgia Tech, Wake Forest travels to Clemson and N.C. State is at Virginia. The four winners will advance into the double-elimination final rounds to be held Thursday through Sunday at State's Doak Field in Raleigh. In action this weekend, the Tar Heels split games with Eastern Connecticut and defeated Connecticut. Eastern beat Carolina 11-10 Friday night, but the Heels won 9-2 Saturday night. Carolina defeated Connecticut 8-7 in 11 innings Sunday afternoon. The action gives Carolina a 35-1 3 mark neading into the ACC tourney. Tar Heel sophomore Scott Bradley extended his consecutive game hitting streak to 29 games with hits in each of the three games this weekend. r rates 25 words or less Students H. 75 Non-Students 52.75 Add 5 for each additional word 1.00 more for boxed ad or bold-face type 10 percent discount for ads run 5 consecutive days Pcom print very clearly announcements ARROGANCE IS APPEARING in Memorial Hall Friday, April 25. O f?0 c!"r mr p fTy is a panelled wall covered with crayon drawings in the hand of a small child, including one that shows a stick-man "Daddy" coaching at third base. Still farther left is a tall set of shelves on which rests a trophy that reads "Third Place 1 978." Behind the desk sits Mike Roberts. The office fits its occupant, mainly because that back wall is a microcosm of Mike Roberts' life. Most people see Roberts only in his role as North Carolina's head baseball coach. Certainly, that's a big part of his life and you'd have to look long and hard to find a man as dedicated to his job as is the 30-year-old native of Kingsport, Tenn. But baseball is not his whole life. Roberts has his priorities arranged and baseball is not on top of the list. "I don't think 1 arrange my priorities," he says, "God does. The most important thing to me is that God is first and that He always stays there. As for the game with Duke, Carolina coach Mike Roberts says just because the Devils placed last in the league, the Heels don't have a free pass into the final rounds. "It's just like any other sport," he said, "Duke would rather play and beat us than anybody. We'll just have to be ready to play." Many of the Carolina players, at least those who were around in 1978, won't have any trouble getting prepared to play Duke in the tournament. They will remember the first round game that year when Duke upset Carolina 3-2 to knock the Heels out of the tournament. "Yes, I remember that," Roberts said. "We got Jim Atkinson on third with a triple in the ninth and had him try to steal home. He got thrown out. I definitely do remember that game." There will be a 75 cents admission charge to students at today's game with Duke, Roberts said. -DAVID POOLE IV -. I, f' NEED MONEY? Without His help, I don't think 1 could get through a season. He's my coach, and without Him I don't think I could be a very good coach to, our ballclub." Roberts says his devotion to the church comes from the influence of his parents while he was growing up. He is very active in the Fellowship of Christian Athletes and teaches a Sunday School class at Carrboro Baptist Church. Don't use God's name in vain around Mike Roberts, because he won't tolerate it. And. as with many who actively discuss their religious convictions, Roberts has been accused of pushing his beliefs on others. One Atlantic Coast Conference coach, Clemson's Bill Wilhelm, has said flatly that he does not like Roberts. "1 don't feel like, personally, that 1 push things on my players, 1 don't like that word," Roberts says. American Cancer Society person. The most important thing is that we respect each other for the way we work and the way we do things." Roberts and his wife Nancy have two children, Brian, 2, and Angie, 5. 1 am sure there are times when I put baseball ahead of my family." Roberts says, "but my family should really be second. Baseball, particularly in the spring, takes a lot of time away from my children and my family, but I do try to keep them involved in baseball as much as I can." In short, Roberts says that although baseball is important in his life, there are things that concern him more. "1 don't think I can coach baseball forever. 1 feel like God and my family will last as long as I am here on earth. 1 don't think baseball necessarily will. That's the reason it's got to be down the list in priorities." Wednesday: Roberts and Carolina baseball.
