4Th3 DciSy Tar Heel'Tussday, September 2, 1980 Ul . .. -y KJ j Dy DALE JENKINS ' ' Staff Wriifr UNC zoology professor Alan Feduccia says he is convinced that books written by scientists don't have to be unintelligible to the avenre reader. And he adds that he hopes his new book, The Age of Birds, will convince others of that, too. "This is my "field of study. The book itself is, in every chapter, covering a topic I'm keenly interested in from the standpoint of research. The secret to this book was faking this information from the domain of scientists and bringing it down to where the average 'birder' can read and enjoy it," Feduccia said. As an evolutionary biologist, Feduccia has concentrated on the study of birds, because they have played a large role in evolutionary theory. "That (the link between birds and evolution) is really my focal point," he said. , If! dresses with black fish silk-screened vertically on green cloth. The dresses are on display in the exhibition. The titles of other abstract works also gave flavor to the show. They include "It's not a FISH, mother, It's a TATOO. Everyone at the office has one," an acrylic by Ginny Campbell; Paul Dean's collage entitled '"HusUerfish;" "It's a Fish Eat Fish World," a mobile by Berkley Grimball; Paul Jcffrion's "Shad Cafe" and Ron Kraver's etching "Proposal for a Coney Island White IVeYc Hack in Chanel Hill offering ths best in Disco, Beach, Rock 'n' Roll & Bluegrass Traveling Disco Complete Light and Sound Show A Four Hour Party $ JQQOO anywhere in ths city limits 'for only ..on bookings made before Sept, 30, 1980 A jt if The LUNCHEON SPECIALS $2.75 Steak and Cheese sandwich with French Fries. Ih the four years Feduccia has been working on The Age of Birds, he also has been working on other books and publications. This latest book is his third in the past five vears. In addition, Feduccia was honorarily inducted in 1978 as research associate" with the Department of Vertebrate Zoology in the National Museum of Natural History of the Smithsonian Institution. Feduccia plans to write more books that would interest the general public. "I hope to have a book on the fossils of birds (for the general public) sometime," he said. The Age of Birds, published by the Harvard University Press, should be released by Oct. 1. "This (book) is my bran child. It was something I had in mind for a long time. The Held hat; never been synthesized. I was anxious to get all this material together for the first time," Feduccia said. Fish Trap." Jones' and Campbell's main concern when organizing the show was to encourage artists .to v r,wn works. Jones said after she had her own show last May, she realized how necessary an exhibition is for an artist. "Suddenly I felt like I wasn't a poor little lost college student," she said. "I was progressing in a straight line instead of just in cyclical semesters and not going anywhere. "1 hope people can do a lot of these exhibitions. The exhibition was a whole lot of work, but its worth it." Campbell, Jones and other artists involved in the unorthodox creations agree that artists should attempt their own shows rather than just wait for "recognized" art exhibitions. Jones coordinated an exhibition of her own etchings for the first time last May and then joined Campbell to piece together this show. r QPtH U MOUSS .
