r 6The Daily Tar HeelWednesday, September 3, 1980 T fl '"i ""h O " .4. 1 - . GEOFFREY MOCK SSaff Writer n 7 , ..1 The North Carolina men's soccer team opens its 19S0 season with an . intrastate contest against Atlantic Christian at 7:30 tonight in Wilson. Coach Anson Dorrance said the opener will test the Tar Heels. "We're not taking this as a warm-up," Dorrance said. "Atlantic Christian year in and year out is one of the best teams in their conference. They will be challenging. Any intrastate game that North Cardinal plays in, the opposition will play better." Carolina started practice later than in past years in order to comply with a new NCAA regulation limiting soccer practice to 15 days before a season opener. Dorrance said the rule shouldn't affect the team's performance. "In terms of tactical experience we're well ahead of last year, he said. "We. returned a lot of experienced players, and we've spent a great deal of time on tactical situations." Dorrance said he has liked what he's seen in practice. "I'm very pleased with the way we've been moving the ball," he said. "We've concentrated on defense. The goalies are ahead of last year. We only need to establish good offensive habits." - . Dorrance has given his players little relief from the 90-degree heat, working them through grueling two-and-a-half hour practices. "We train in the heat of the day by design," he said. "This means we'll be well-prepared for day games and have an advantage at night 4 Mefi' soccer at Atlantic Christian at 7:30 p.m. The practices have been marred by three injuries. Freshman John Blum broke his foot and will be out for the season and reserve goalie Bill Eaynard will be out for three weeks with an injured Back. The most critical injury occurred when Ben Abell was lost for the entire season with a broken leg. "We've had less injuries per se, but as many serious ones as in the past," Dorrance said. "Benny Abell was playing very well for us and was contending for a starting position. After Atlantic Christian, Carolina continues on the road with visits to Elon this Sunday and UNC-Charlotte on Sept. 10. The Tar Heels' home opener is Sept. 13 with the Mayor's Cup against traditional rivals Duke, N.C. State and East Carolina. 11 I MATE IT WttBi THE rep emu smarts HOLES IM AW PLANS... yK An the Bl -AK5 M A CUT.' V by GrryTribnj HA I WA i - 1 t, .-, i M m YOUHA&A GQQDHXm 'WAY A'ZIT&S ALL. Ey CUTTON EARNES Stsff Writer North Carolina basketball players Jimmy Elack and James Worthy are each recovering more quickly from . injuries than anticipated, team physician Joseph DeWalt said last week. "We are very satisfied with both of them," DeWalt said. "With Jimmy (Black) there already is some bone formation which he hadn't expected yet, so he's ahead of schedule." Black, a junior guard, underwent back surgery June 12 after he suffered a fracture of the cervical vertebrae in a single-car accident near Pittsboro June 7. Following the surgery DeWalt said Black would be ready to play by mid-December, but now he says that Elack may be. ready in November. Worthy, a sophomore forward, fractured an ankle in the Tar Heels' home loss to Maryland in January. "I'm very satisfied with the progress," Worthy said. "I thtnV I'm ro- ad cf schedule. "The ankle is weak at times, usually after playing, and there is a little swellirg, but I'll be 100 percent by Oct. 15 (the first day of practice)," he said. DeWalt said that Worthy is progressing well and that he will not be limited when basketball season starts. James is tely free and capable to do what he wants to do," DeWalt said. "He's been working all summer with (trainer) Marc Davis on streching and strengthening exercises and he looks good." During the summer Worthy jogged two or three miles a day and ran sprints. Recently he has been joining the pick-up games in Carmichael against players such as Mitch Kupchak, Phil Ford and MikeO'Koren. Black, although recovering ahead cf schedule, has not yet been given the OK to play competifively. He has been riding his bicycle and .DK"T7F3t Photo Jzmes Worthy ...beck en courts shooting a little. DeWalt said that Worthy, who suffered the same injury as that of Olympic skier Phil Mayer, will have an operation the week after basketball season ends to remove the pins and rod in his ankle. "We expect no problems with that operation and we hope he does as weH as Mayer did," DeWalt said. Mayer qualified for the Winter Olympics after undergoing the same type of operation. i i ! - Apply after 2, or before 11 Downtown Franklin St. across from Granville Towers ICS S.
