"There was nothir.3 magical about it," Crum said at his weekly press conference Tuesday. "We just played a basic defense. Our offense held on to the football and when your defense only has to play 55 plays, you're going to get a good performance." Even with a lack cf hocus-pocus, Carolina has managed to work a trick no UNC team has pulbd off since 1943 a Top-10 ranking. The 3-0 Tar Heels are at No. 10 in this week s Associated Press poll Carolina's win over Maryland was largely responsible for the rise in the rankings, yet Crum spent a lot of time Tuesday answering questions about why his team didn't beat Maryland worse than 17-3. "People have asked me why we didn't score more points," Crum said. "Number one, Maryland has a good defensive football team. Number two, we wanted to hold on to the ball and not press for the score, because pressing can sometimes lead to turnovers. We were very patient." Carolina's offensive game plan against the Terps has been called conservative by many, but Crum said he thought it would have been useless to try to run outside against Maryland's wide-tackle-six defense. "You have to do what the defense will allow you to do," he said. There's no need to run right into the teeth of the other team's strengths. We stayed inside because that's the way we felt we could move the ball against Maryland." In preparing for this week's game against Georgia Tech, Crum said the Tar Heels were going to work on the pass to i f S' ' Jr r ) now NEW YU.7K STYLE r 7 1 : "J C- -1. The Yellow Jackets are about a 50-50 pass-run team, he said.' "We'll have to get ready for the pass," Crum said. "The big thing is for us to get the pass rush ready so they won't be able to sit back in the pocket and find someone to throw to." . Crum is looking for another physical battle after last week's bruiser with the Terps. "Tech can be a physical team," he said, "especially if they're emotionally keyed up. I'm sure they'll come in here sky-high, so we'll have to be ready to play a very physical game." Crum was also asked about a discussion he had with Maryland coach Jerry Claiborne at midfield after the game. The discussion, . which lasted several minutes, has been a point of speculation among members of the media all week. "We were discussing a personal matter," Crum said. " don't think it would benefit anyone if I were to comment." Claiborne had been visibly upset by a call earlier in the game when an official penalized the Terps 1 5 yards after players and coaches ran onto the field. In Monday's Washington Post, Claiborne called the penalty a mistake. "How did the official know that those players weren't defensive substitutions?" Claiborne said. "It was a dead ball. We could put anyone in the game we wanted to. After we explained why our players were on the field, he (the official) should have picked up the flag and put it in his pocket." . Crum would not comment on speculation that the discussion after the game involved the "gentleman's agreement" among Atlantic Coast Conference coaches over the exchange of game films. Despite the lingering controversy, however, the Maryland game is history. Crum and his players must now conjure up another good performance if they wish to remain among the nation's elite. Last year David Blum and Chris Brown scored in overtime for a 2-0 Tar Heel victory. Ricky Marvin, who as a freshman two years ago scored the winning goal in a 2-1 Carolina win over Campbell, said UNC must always expect a tough game from intrastate schools. "Whenever we play these schools," Marvin said, "we're the biggest competition for them. They get psyched up for us and rise to the occasion. We just have to take each game as they come and not look forward to bigger games. -With the recent rainy weather, Fetzer Field may be difficult to play on. The rain will even things up, Marvin said.
