Wednesday, October 1, 1980The Dz'.'.y i"zt He el' 5 "vl J Think of college football and one thinks of huge crowds, tailgate picnics and marching bands. It is more than just a football yame it is an event which involves fans as much as players. It isn'i always that way. Even at UNC, where big-time college football dominates Saturday afternoons, there still exists a group cf 35 guys ho play football not for glory but simply because they love the game. The group is the UNC Club Football team. "They play because they just don't want to quit playing after high school," club coach and president Joe McCu'Ien said. "It really takes a lot of dedication, because we don't get big crowds or a lot of publicity." Because club football does not have the glamour of its varsity counterpart, McCuilen said the club lost a number of good players each year, a type of weeding-out process. "We miss out on a lot of good athletes because they come to a game and see only a 100 people there," he said. What is left are those who like to play, and McCuilen said, they definitely can play. The majority of them played high school football, and McCuilen, in his-third year with the team, said this was by far the best team he had played on. "We have everyone back on offense and defense from last year," he said. "We've got some additions that have helped when we lost a couple of starters due to injuries. "Lynn Featherstone (the team's faculty adviser and former coach) has said in the 10 years he's been here this is either the best or one of the two best teams he's seen." McCuilen said the team had a number of outstanding players, including a few he said easily could play small-college football. Defensive end Steve Flowers and offensive tackle Carl Kirby played in the North Carolina North-South Boys Home All-Star Game at the conclusion of their high school careers. The defense, unscored on in the last two games, is anchored by linebackers Chris Froman and Butch Matthews, both former standouts at Raleigh's Sanderson High School. The offense is led by two Greensboro Grimsley products, receivers Keith Black and Lee Evans, and by hard-running tailback Mark Yost. McCuilen, who quaterbacked the team before a recent injury, was a two-time all-conference selection at Elm City High School. til V&iO Caw v m avi O By John Drescher McCuilen thinks the club has a good chance to win the Magus Cup, given annually to the North Carolina Club Football Champion. The team plays a 10-game schedule, which includes six conference games against club teams from around the state and a trip to Florida to play St. Leo's College. Although the team is off to a 1-1-1 start, McCuilen said lie was not worried. Two of the games were against community teams, OPfN 14 HOUM FAMOUS Af.:C3 COCOES r it V Keg & lea delivery reservations ,7-9791 Of 942-1434 V j, 1 free jewish university ."tit.-, ij j rut ir Classes beginning October 6 MONDAYS ; Thai Rhythm end Vr.j f,!ood cf the Prayerfcook Ftebbi Fischer. John Doettigheirner scored his seventh and eighth goals cf the season to lead the North Carolina men's soccer team to a 6-2 victory over Campbell Wednesday at Fetzer Field. With a total of eight goals so far, Boettigheirner is now halfway toward breaking the school record of 16 scores held jointly by John Ghanim in 1959 and Louis Bush in 1967. A slight drizzle and a muddy field kept players slipping throughout the game, but the Tar Heel offense found the grove early and started pressuring the Camel defense. Carolina wasted several scoring opportunities until Sean Naber scored at 24: 10 into the half off an assist from, Adam Abronski. UNC defeats ASU in volleyball match The UNC volleyball team got back on the winning track Tuesday night and defeated Appalachian State 15-8, 15-5 and 15-4. - Coach Beth Miller shuffled players in and out of the match and tried out new offensive strategies. "I think our match showed that we have a very flexible team," Miller said. "Depth is important when you have these all-day tournaments and you have to give your starters a rest." Once on the board, the Tar Heels went on a rampage, scoring three times in the '.pace of 10 minutes. Boettigheirner scored the first cf his goals with 17:17 remaining, assisted by Chris Heyn and Tim Ensley. Ricky Marvin followed less than a minute later with assists from Heyn and Nick Donnelly. Junior Eric Blum completed the first-half scoring with his second goal of the season, assisted by Jay Ainslie and Naber. Boettigheirner made the score 5-0 by putting Camel goalie Mike Oxendine's fanible into the goal with Mike Fiocco and Ainslie getting assists. North Carolina's attetrpt for a third straight shutout was thwarted on a L!iAe Schmacher penalty kick midway through the second half. Ellly Prcpster scored UNCs sixth goal off a Donnelly corner kick, but the Camels came back to cut the final margin to four with a Bill Bowers goal with two minutes left.
