Friday, January 16, 1iJ81The Daily Tar Heel5 7 Wechen d preview t ,3 9 UJ' i "- 1 1 F T f" " Cy GEOFFREY MOCK Staff Writer Lost somewhere during the past two years amidst the success and recognition for North Carolina wrestlers CD. Mock and Dob Monahan was an equally strong performance by 126-pounder David Cooke. This year, though, Mock and Monaghan are being redshirted and it has fallen to Cooke to provide the leadership necessary to run Carolina's freshman-laden team into a winner. Cooke's 13-1 win Monday was one of few highlights in an otherwise lackadaisical meet against Northern Iowa. Coach Dill Lam said he hoped to remedy this problem by getting his freshmen to follow Cooke's example. David Ccc!;3 i:ns cn cdventca over opponent ... Tar Heel wrestler an outstanding team leader DTH M,itl Cii n ' Oavi Co "He was the only returning starter against Northern Iowa," Lam said. "Some of the other kids don't know that I won't put up with some of the stuff I saw. Dave is a figher and is aggressive and the others have to pick up on that." The graduation of five seniors 'from last year's unbeaten team and the absence of Mock and Monaghan leave Cooke as the only holdover from a team that won UNC's first Atlantic Coast Conference wrestling title two years ago. Cooke said he was trying to carry on the spirit of that team. "The seniors in my first year really wanted the ACC championship and they put in the work that was needed," Cooke said. "That carried over to last year,, but this year's team is young and the confidence has to come." ' Confidence for Cooke came last when, as a sophomore, he broke into the starting lineup for good and won the ACC title in the 126-pound class. "This year more than any other time I have that confidence," he said. "Wrestling with guys like CD. and Bobby and Harry (Barnabae), you can't help getting better." Cooke has started the year strong with a '3-0 record in dual meets and a fifth-place finish in the Midlands Tournament over the Christmas break. One of the dual-meet wins was a 10-1 victory over Auburn All-America Tony Leonino, a win which avenged two tournament losses to Leonino earlier this year. "The win over Tony was one of my better ' matches," Cooke said. "I had a lot of time over Christmas to think about the losses and what to do. I had a good Midlands and every thing started coming together." Cooke has rebounded from losses in the past to win important rematches. After losing to Billy Marino of Clemson last year in a dual meet, Cooke beat Marino in the ACC finals to advance to the NCAA tournament. "When you lose, you always look back on something and say if. Against Leonino the 'ifs changed for the best. When you beat a guy for the first time then that continues to ; the next match. It becomes harder for him to beat you again. That's why when you wrestle someone you want to wrestle as hard as you can." "Before the season 1 was hoping to make All-America, but now I hope to make the top four instead of just the top eight." Now, Cooke is trying to help his team. The Tar Heels will try to end their two-meet losing streak against Navy and Yale in a quadrangu lar meet Saturday in College Park, Md. Cooke said the team was looking to progress with each match and predicted that an aggres sive Carolina team may surprise some opponents soon. "Fighters never look bad. If you fight on the mat everything will end out all right," Cooke said. "As long as we get that confi dence by the end" of the year we'll be in the running for our third straight ACC title." 1 SUPER FRIDAYFRI., JAN. 16 $1 WI.D. CARROLL HALL 7:00 9:30- 12:00 pm . A SnOn PRESENTATION From Staff Reports The North Carolina men's and women's swimming teams, both sporting impressive records, will travel to South Carolina Satur day to face a pair of tough Gamecock teams. The men's team enters the meet with a 4-1 mark, its only loss coming at the hands of perennial national power Tennessee last Saturday, 63-40, the ninth time the Heels have faced the Volunteers without a win. Robert Bingham, named Carolina's top swimmer 'against Tennessee, won the 200 breast stroke and also swam well in the 400-medley relay. The Tar Heels took first place in the Penn State Relays in addition to the four dual-meet wins. The women's team travels to Columbia, sporting a 4-0 mark including a fine showing in the Texas Ail-American Invitational in Austin. The Tar Heels, represented by seven swimmers, captured 11 top-five finishes. The women's team has gained national attention by holding the nation's fastest times in five events and a total of 20 times that are among the nation's best in 1 1 events. ill H M W iiO Join Our "Early Cird" and Summer Classes In Preparation for Your Fall 1SS3 Exams Permanent Centers open days, evening and weekends. "Our next four meets will all be big ones and could go either way." The Carolina gymnastics team travels to Maryland for two matches this weekend facing Towson State Friday and the University of Maryland Saturday. The Heels are coming off of a 124-108 victory over Georgia College last Friday and Coach Ken Ourso hopes his team's success continues against Towson State, which has been a tough foe for the Tar Heels in the past. "Two years ago our only loss was to Towson," Ourso said about his defending NCAIAW champions. "We expect to win both meets (this weekend)," . The women's basketball team will look to improve its 7-9 mark when it travels to Raleigh this weekend for the Wolf pack Doubleheaders at Reynolds Coliseum. Carolina will meet Tennessee Tech Friday night and Miami on Saturday. Both games begin at 7 p.m. Turnovers and mental mistakes continued to haunt the Tar Heels in their Tuesday night loss to East Carolina in Carmichael Auditorium. Carolina was guilty of 21 turnovers, far above the 10-15 rate that Coach Jennifer Alley is searching for. The wrestllr?2 team travels to College Park, Md., facing Navy and Yale Saturday while the women's indoor track team also hits the road meeting Virginia in Charlottesville. The men's indoor track team will host South Carolina at 2 p.m. Saturday. The fencing team also will be in action Saturday.
