Danny Kester, a sophomore from Golds boro, was appointed business manager of the Yack and Dani Thompson, a fresh man from China Grove, was selected for business manager of the Quarterly. Dinkins, a junior from Yadkinvilie, said that he hopes to increase subscrip tion sales, student portrait participation and campus representation. "The Yack has been very successful over the past two years. Any further progress will be small." h. Whone could not be reached for com ment Tuesday night. The Orange County Board of Com missioners withdrew the offer Monday and offered the job to Interim Director Kathy Battern. Whone, of Monroe, Conn., was ori ginally appointed to the position on Feb. 17, but the board withdrew that offer be cause of his indecision about taking the job. "We were notified that he had recon sidered his acceptance of the position," board member Don Willhoit said. Whone called board chairman Anne Barnes on Feb. 27 to reject the job offer. He then wanted to reaccept the position on Feb. 28. In an hour-long executive session Mon day, the board decided to reject Whone's reacceptance of the job and to choose Kathy Battern as finance director. "I think she'll do a good job," Willhoit said. Battern had previously applied for the position and had been serving as act ing, county finance director since Neal Evans resigned in November. Willhoit said Whone was concerned whether the job was just a political ap pointment fluctuating with changes in the composition of the Board of Com missioners, or a stable position. . . a -...,7 v vtmri&Mna UriiSh Gclioy Ccmrnittoo presents CRAFT WORKSHOPS Basketry, off-loom weaving, paper making, fabric painting March 16-21 Workshop descriptions, times end signups at the Union Desk SIGN UP NOW OPEN 24 HOURS 7 DAYS A WEEK . March, an English graduate student from Chicago, has served as interim edi tor for the Carolina Quarterly since De cember. He said the Quarterly is a uni versity magazine that features literary figures and literary reviews. The magazine publishes works of UNC students and faculty three times a year and is a profes sional journal of the arts. It is operated by students and distributed nationally, he said. ; "It provides experience and opportu nity for students interested in the world of publishing," he said. The next issue of the Carolina Quarterly will be published April 6 and can be purchased at the Bulls Head Book Store and Student Stores. The Media Board also extended the deadline for applications for Alchemist editor and business manager and Cellar Door business manager until Friday. The Media Board will choose a new Cellar Door editor today. lead to Sliit Whone is presently the comptroller for the city of Monroe, responsible for auditing city accounts and certifying expenditures. "If I'm doing a good job, I don't need to worry who the board members are," Battern said. Battern said experience is her best as set. She has been the financial director for the Chapel Hill housing authority and a financial analyst for Orange County in the recent past. Battern said she was personally disap pointed when originally turned down for the job. But professionally, she realized a number of people with good credentials had applied. The transition between new finance directors has been very smooth because of the exceptional staff, Battern said. She said her biggest project at first would be setting up the county budget for the fiscal year beginning July 1 . Willhoit said the finance director is re sponsible for managing the financial operations and cash flow of the county. The job includes distributing funds to different organizations. Battern will draw a $25,908 salary, which is an increase of $1,224 from last year.. Whone was originally offered $24,684 for the job. Former finance director Neal Evans earned $35,000 annually but he also served as assistant county manager, Battern said. The Board recently decided to separate the two positions.
