... Tar Heels dropped their ACC opener to Virginia
ITGimiaiG falls to : Cavaliers
doubles for the first time this season.
"We haven't played together for a
while so that was tough," Fenichell said.
"It's a little disappointing to start off
the ACC season with a loss. We beat Vir
ginia the past three years, but they've
got an excellent team this year."
The loss leaves the Tar Heels record at
15-7 overall and 0-1 in the ACC. They
face Clemson Saturday in S.C.
"Clemson was the pre-season pick to
win the ACC, but I think we can play
them a close match," Coach Allen Morris
said.

The UNC men's tennis team dropped '
its opening Atlantic Coast Conference
dual match of the season, losing to Vir
ginia 6-3 Tuesday at the Hinton James
Courts.
At No. 1 singles Virginia's Geoff
MacDonald defeated Ray Disco in three
sets, 6-1, 1-6, 6-3:
"We've had some incredibly bad luck
with injuries and those have definitely
hampered the team some," said Disco.
"But we're coming around and we'll see
these guys again in the ACC tournament"
In the No. 2 slot, Carolina's Ron Er
skine beat Mike Einsidler 6-1, 6-3. UNC
lost at No. 3 and No. 5 as Jay Horine

Buford lost a heartbreaker after being
ahead 5-1 in the third set, 6-2, 6-7, 7-6.
Senior Chris Fenichell beat Brent

No. 6 to make the score 3-3 after the
singles matches.
Virginia swept all three doubles
matches. Whitaker and Disco fell to
MacDonald and Sheinmann 6-3, 6-2.
Dsk Potts and Fenichell lost a close

Editor's note: David Poole spent Final Four weekend
in Philadelphia covering the Tar Heels 'quest for the
NCAA title. The following ere some reflections and
sidelights he brought home from college basketball 's
.'biggest event.
Dy DAVID POOLE
. Staff Writer " '
PHILADELPHIA Never, if there's any way to
avoid it, go to a big city in the midst of a transit
strike. -The Philadelphia bus, subway and trolley
systems were idle during the weekend and the traffic
was miserable.
Sunday afternoon, a custom car show at the Civic
Center near the University of Pennsylvania campus (
caused a jam around the Hilton Hotel where most
of the UNC alumni were staying. It was so bad that
a 15-block cab ride from the press hotel to the
Hilton, normally a 10-minute ride, took nearly an hour.
Sunday was a beautiful day in Philadelphia, but
Monday was the pits. The gray overcast soon gave
way to a steady rain and was very appropriate in
many ways.
The weather notwithstanding, the events of the
day in Washington made Philadelphia a dismal
place to be on Monday. .
Bob Ryan, a columnist in The Philadelphia
Inquirer was extremdy critical cf the NCAA and
of NEC for playins and tdscastir.3 the grr; in light
of the attcrr.pt on the life cf Rcr.-Ii r.:.?:,m. He
said in. his column that phytzj lbs gsnia "turned
my stomach." .;.
Actually, the gims's start was moved back about
10 minutes and a decision, to.. play the game was"
made only after a meeting in -which the situation
was fully discussed. .
- Wayne Duke, commissioner-cf-the-Big 10 and
president of the NCAA Division 1 basketball com
mittee, met with NCAA officials and officials of the
two schools participating in the finals after the
consolation game to discuss if the game would go
"on as scheduled.
Duke emerged from the meeting and told a hastily
called press conference that after carefully
monitoring the condition of President Reagan, the
people present at the meeting had decided to pro
ceed as planned. -
Ryan's column wasnt the only story in a major
newspaper which ridiculed the college game and the
hoopla surrounding the Final Four.
While media representatives from North Carolina,
Virginia, Indiana and Louisiana seemed to be
content to cover the event, those from New York,
Washington and other large cities looked for more.
One story ridiculed the fan who would spend the
money to come a thousand miles to see his team
play basketball, the writer apparently forgetting
that those fans make college basketball possible.
- One particular incident is illustrative. Bobby
Knight, as everyone knows, shoved an LSU fan
against a wall in a hotel lounge and left him in a
trash can Saturday night. r ' 1 ! '
Sunday, at a press conference, Knight went through
an Inquirer story about the incident and pointed
out what he called "unfactual" parts of the story.
Then, Monday morning,- a Washington Star
columnist lambasted the press there for not digging
deeper into this incident. In that same piece, the
writer was critical of Knight for actions that detrac
ted from the basketball games.
Apparently, the writer couldn't see the paradox
in his two stands. Bobby Knight's fight was news,
but the good writers decided to let him look like the
jerk he is off the floor, and concentrate on Knight's
vn ach on the floor.
Most reporters realized that they were spending
their papers' money to cover basketball, not Bobby
Knight's imitation of Billy Martin.

women 8 tenuia
After coming off several close matches
to win the Clemson Invitational tourna
ment Sunday, the women's tennis team
plays in what should be an easy match
against N.C. State at 2:15 p.m. today in
Raleigh.
"State is good, but the match will be a
breather compared to the ones that we
have been playing and the ones that we
have coming up," Coach Kitty Harrison
said.
. The Tar Heels have encountered several
-Top 20 teams this season making their'
10-2 record look very impressive. They
must also face nationally-ranked Tenne
ssee here this Saturday.
Kathy Barton, the number-one seed
for UNC, said that her Wolfpack oppo
nent will be tough, but the rest of the
team should be able to handle State with
little trouble.
"The match will be a good break from
some of these other matches," Barton
said. "Every match is important, and we
have to win. This match will be a good
match to practice for the one this Satur
day against Tennessee."
In other action today, the women's
softball team comes off a tough weekend
tournament to face Elon in a double
header at 3 p.m. on Hinton' James field.
The baseball team is away against
, N.C. State for a 3 p.m. game in Raleigh.
The men's golf team plays in the
Houston All-American Intercollegiate
tournament.
