The UNC men's tennis team was on
both ends of 8-1 scores this weekend as it
lost Saturday to the Atlantic Coast Con
ference's top-ranked Clemson Tigers
and then defeated Georgia Tech by the
same score Sunday.
UNC claimed five of six singles matches
against the Yellow Jackets in dropping
Tech's record to 8-10. The Tar Heels
raised their overall record to 16-8 while
capturing their first ACC win against two
conference losses.
Ray Disco easily defeated Tech's Chuck
Hyder, 6-4, 6-2 at No. 1 singles. Number
two Ron Erskine (61, 6-0) and No. 3
Ken Whitaker (6-1 , 6-0) also encountered
little difficulty.
The Tar Heels' only bright spot against
Clemson Saturday afternoon was at No.
1 doubles where Dek Potts and Chris
Fenichell combined to win in three sets,
6-2, 4-6, 7-6.
North Carolina's next home match
will be Wednesday at 1:30 p.m. against
Wake Forest.
The softball team highlighted a busy
weekend by winning the Western Carolina
Invitational Tournament in Cullowhee.

The Tar Heels lost to Western Carolina
8-6, but came back to beat them 14-4 to
win the double elimination tournament.
They also defeated UNC-Charlotte 11-1,
Milligan of Tennessee 18-2, and
Campbell 6-3.
Carolina placed five players on the
All-tournament team. Cathy MacFarland
was named at third base, Laurie Bailey
at shortstop; Ginny Schreiner at catcher;
Susie Everett at second base; and Susie
Wilson was named outstanding pitcher.
Carolina split a doubleheader against
N.C. State at home Sunday, winning the
first game 8-3 and losing the second 6-0.
The Heels record now stands at 25-12.
They play a doubleheader at UNC
Greensboro today.
The women's tennis team won an im
portant match here Saturday, beating
nationally-ranked Tennessee 6-3. The
Heels won five singles and one doubles
to increase their record to 11-2.
Kathy Barton lost at the No. 1 singles
in three sets 6-4, 1-6, 6-3, but teamed
with Julie Kirby to win at third doubles
7-6,6-1.
Lloyd Hatcher beat Paula Kelly 6-4,
7-5 at number two; Betsy Heidenberger
beat Peta Kelly at the third spot 6-3, 6-0;
Margie Brown won at No. 4, beating
Sally Applebaum 6-J, 6-3; Katherine
Hogan won at No. 5, 6-2, 6-2 over Karen
Stewart; and Jennifer Balent beat Terri
Kirk 6-3, 6-4 at No. 6.
The team travels to Duke to face the
Blue Devils Thursday.
The UNC baseball team was rained
out Sunday in Virginia which may have
been a blessing after the Tar Heels were
trounced Saturday by ACC foe Mary
land 16-6.
Scott Bradley hit two home runs and
Joe Reto, Pete Kumeiga, Greg Schuler
and Eddie Waynick added one each for
UNC.
The baseball team travels to East
Carolina today before returning home
Wednesday to face Liberty Baptist.
