The Town of Chapel Hill opened
bidding last week for 12 new buses
the town wants to buy to replace ex
isting buses, said Bob Godding, Cha
pel Hill's director of transportation.
The North Carolina Public Trans
portation Advisory Council voted
Aug. 4 to match a federal grant with
state funds, providing the money for
seven of the buses, Godding said.
The town had submitted an earlier
request for federal funding (adminis
tered at the state level) for new buses,
but Godding said only part of the re
quest was approved,
i To obtain the balance, the town
submitted a request through another
program at the federal level, which
the federal government approved,
Godding said. !
The buses win be rolling "about a
year from now,' he said.
The Town of Chapel Hill will sub
mit another requ'est for funding for
shelters at bus stops in Chapel Hill,
Carrboro and on campus, Godding
said. The shelters, if approved, will
be at high passenger volume stops.
He said Chapel Hill received an
additional $625,000 in federal oper
ating assistance for public transit for
the current fiscal year and has re
quested more for next year.
