The North Carolina Public Trans portation Advisory Council voted Aug. 4 to match a federal grant with state funds, providing the money for seven of the buses, Godding said. The town had submitted an earlier request for federal funding (adminis tered at the state level) for new buses, but Godding said only part of the re quest was approved, i To obtain the balance, the town submitted a request through another program at the federal level, which the federal government approved, Godding said. ! The buses win be rolling "about a year from now,' he said. The Town of Chapel Hill will sub mit another requ'est for funding for shelters at bus stops in Chapel Hill, Carrboro and on campus, Godding said. The shelters, if approved, will be at high passenger volume stops. He said Chapel Hill received an additional $625,000 in federal oper ating assistance for public transit for the current fiscal year and has re quested more for next year. KAREN HAYWOOD Registration approved The Orange County Board of Elections has approved three days of voter registration on the UNC campus in preparation for the Nov. 3 Chapel Hill and Carrboro munici pal election. The board approved voter regis tration in the Carolina Union on Tuesday Sept. 29 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.,. on Wednesday Sept. 30 from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m. and on Thursday Oct. 1( from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.- Registration for the fall election ends on Monday Oct. 5. Tlx Associated Press NAPLES, Italy U.S. Navy pilot Henry Kleeman said Monday he knew it would "cause a ruckus" but he had no choice except to shoot down two Libyan warplanes over the Mediterranean. One the Libyans fired at his jets, Klee man said, "There was no chance that I was not going to pull the trigger." The two Navy F-14s commanded by Kleeman downed two Libyan air force jets last Wednesday after,-the Americans said, the Libyans fired a missile at them over disputed waters. Kleemann, other officers involved and 6th Fleet commanders met with reporters Monday aboard the USS Nimitz after the nuclear-powered ship, home carrier for . the F-14s, docked in the Bay of Naples. The air battle occurred during an exer cise in missile shooting by Nimitz planes last Tuesday and Wednesday in the south ern Mediterranean. The war-games area included a part of the Gulf of Sidra claimed by Libya as its territory. Some of the Libyan-claimed waters are 100 miles from the nearest Libyan shore. .
