By CHIP WILSON t)TH Staff Writer Swimming the English Channel is more than a test of muscular endurance or swimming ability. It is also a test of the mind. That's the way David Williamson, a writer for the UNC News Bureau, said he felt about his two attempts to swim across the 20.5-mile stretch of water between England and France. Williamson returned Tuesday from England, where he made his most recent attempt Aug. 9. "The most difficult thing about it is psychological," Williamson said. "The first time I tried it (three years ago), I stop ped because of the frustration. After I had been in the water for seven hours, the men in the boat told me I was five miles from shore. After eight hours, they said I was six miles from shore." 1 For insightful analyses of what's going on around the University and around the world, read "Locally,'- "The State " and "At PDO!(E(EQ SK- J- J)urham &v&.J? Williamson said seasickness prevented him from completing his second attempt. Still, he said he found himself engaged in mental conflicts while in the 59-degree water. "After throwing up about 35 times, I asked myself, 'Why the hell am I doing this? But the moment 1 got out of the water I was thinking, 'Why the heck did I get out?' It really affects your mind." Williamson said that 225 people have completed the swim across the channel. "Probably four times that many have at tempted it," he said. In addition to limber muscles and a sound mind, swimming the English Chan nel requires a large pocket book, William son said, "The price of hiring a boat ranges be tween $1,000 and $1,300," he said. "I used some of the local fishermen who were familiar with the channel and the currents." The distance itself wasn't his biggest prob lem, he said, since he had gone lhat far during training. 4 "It's a lot different in the Channel. I had to swim against a current that flowed in an S pattern. In my first attempt, I know I completed the actual distance, but I never made it because I kept moving parallel to the shore.'V A few onlookers and British reporters watched while Williamson started his swim from a shore between Dover and Folkestone, England. Most of the pub licity that day went to American twins who tried to swim the Channel using the butterfly stroke. "They were in the water for an hour, and only completed three or four miles," he said. Williamson plans to try again. "Maybe the year after next. I don't like to start something and not finish it." Daily Tar Heel editorial page. Lvi w4 kilLj uLijW 4 i to.
