More arrests made
VIENNA, Austria (AP) Police investigating a bloody grenade attack on a
downtown synagogue made six more arrests Sunday, authorities said.
The Jewish gathering was shattered Saturday when two men described as
Arabs hurled grenades and fired automatic pistols into the crowded synagogue.
Two people were killed and about 20, including two policemen, were wounded
by bullets, shrapnel and flying glassr police and Red Cross officials said. -
The PLO condemned the assault, while the Israeli government and Austrian
Chancellor Bruno Kreisky accused each other of following policies that fostered
terrorism. . - -
Police said the six men arrested were discovered in an apartment rented for
at least two months by one of the men grabbed by officers outside the syna
gogue. They identified him as Hassan Marwan and said he had given them a
false name, Ali Yussof, and said he was Egyptian.
Austrian Radio reported there were some Palestinians among the six arrested
Sunday, but police refused to confirm the report or supply further details.
Angolan fighting continues
LISBON, Portugal (AP) The Angolan provincial capital of Cunene was
captured by South African troops in fresh fighting in the southern part of the
nation, the official Angolan news agency reported Sunday.
The Angop news agency, monitored in Lisbon, said the Angolan Defense
Ministry announced that South African troops had occupied the city of Ngiva
on Saturday and had also taken eight small towns near the provincial capital.
The agency quoted the Defense Ministry as saying Angolan forces had shot
down five South African warplanes, two in a bombing attack on the town of
Tchibemba, 185 miles from the Angolan-South-West Africa border. j
f The report of renewed attacks follows two days of debate in New York by
the U.N. Security Council on the South African incursion into Angola. The
15-member group adjourned Saturday until today. Third World nations pro
posed broad sanctions against the white-minority ruled government in Pretoria.
Back pay sought by Garwood
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (AP) Robert Garwood, the Marine private
convicted of collaborating with the enemy in Vietnam, is seeking some $147,000
in back pay held by the government during his nearly 14 years as a prisoner of
war. t ; ,
John C. Lowe, ah attorney who represents Garwood, said the case would be
brought before a hearing officer Tuesday. Months could pass before a verdict
is handed down. . .
'There's not going to be any witnesses or anything like that. . . .We're saying
basically the trial record shows he's entitled to his back pay," Lowe said.
A Pentagon spokesman said in Washington, however, that the proceeding
was expected to last two days and would be closed to the public and news media.
Garwood's other attorney, Vaughan Taylor of Jacksonville, N.C, said
Garwood applied for the back pay two years ago.
