STUDENTS: Candidates with the Association for a Better Carrboro (ABC) received an invita tion to a meeting to endorse candidates by the Carrboro Community Coalition (a political group). The candidates found it untenable to attend that endorsement session and sent the following letter to the Coalition: "We received your invitation to a meeting on October 5. 1981, at 7:30 p.m. We feel that it is inappropriate for a partisan political group to hold such a meeting. Any debate on the views and platforms of the candidates would properly be carried out by a non-partisan organization. Therefore we decline your Invitation. We believe that if you truely were interested in discussion of opposing views you would have encouraged Ms. Sonya Lewis to present her platform on the issues. Instead you have en couraged her to withdraw, showing that, in fact, you have already made your political decision to endorse members of the Coalition who are incumbents in the municipal election. Milliard Caldwell. Joyce Garrett and Roger Messer are genuinely' interested In honesty and could not in good conscience participate in something that is not what it purports to be." A member of the Coalition subsequently report ed to the newspaper "in the past candidates always vied for support even if they were among those who had little chance for a Coalition endorsement." First, the ABC candidates are not seeking the Coalition's endorsement Many people are higly dissatisfied with Mr. Sharer's, Mr. Foushee's, Mr. Drakeford's and Ms. White's performance on the Carrboro town board. Second, the ABC candidates would welcome a debate conducted by an impartial panel. Please visit the ABC office today, Thursday, Oct. 8 from 4:30-7 p.m. at 108 E. Main Street, Carrboro, and discuss the issues with the candi dates: Roger MESSER, for mayor. Rep. Al Adams, D-Wake, said he and other Democratic legislators would reccommend that the state double its "standard of need," a maximum income level used to determine eligibility for the. Aid to Families with Dependent Children. Adams said changes in federal regulations made by the Reagan administra tion had the effect of providing a "work disincentive," because families would be able to earn less monthly income before losing all federal assistance.
