Women's soccer team vies for national
title
North Carolina's unbeaten and top-ranked women's
soccer team has earned the top seed in the first AIAW
National Tournament, which starts today and will last
through Sunday.
Carolina, 200, will be joined in the tournament by 11
other teams representing the AlAW's nine regions, in
cluding a trio of fellow Undefeated scjuads Missouri-St
Louis (150), Oregon (12-0-2) and Texas A&M (11-0).
Overall, the 12 teams boast a combined record of
162-25-8, which could make this weekend's tournament
a very exciting event
First-round action begins today : with the top four
seeds in the tournament receiving byes that day. Fifth
seeded Connecticut (14-2-1) meets 12th-seeded Calif or
nia (1 6-8) at 1 2 noon in Kenan Stadium; sixtlvseeded Col
orado College (1 7-3-2) meets 1 1 th-seeded Central Florida
(8-2) at 3 p.m. in Kenan; seventh-seeded Cincinnati (10-2)
meets 10th seeded Texas A&M (11-0) at 12 noon at Fet
zer Field; and eight-seeded Massachusetts (11-4-2) meets
ninth-seeded Wisconsin (15-4-1) at 3 p.m. at Fetzer.
Friday, the winners of the first-round games will move
on to quarterfinal action with the losers moving into the
consolation bracket The winner of the U-Mass-Wiscon-sin
game will meet top-seeded North Carolina at 3 p.m.
in Kenan. The winner of the Cincy-A&M game will meet
second-seeded Missouri-St Louis (15-0) at 12 noon in
Kenan. Finally, the winner of the Conn-Cal game will
meet second-seeded Oregon (12-0-2) at 3 pm at Fetzer.
The semifinal games are slated for Kenan at 12 noon
and 2 p.m. Saturday with the third place and champion
ship games in Kenan at the same time Sunday.
. The Knights of Central Florida, coached by J im Rudy, .
took its only two defeats of the season from North Caro
lina. Overall, UCF has had an excellent scoring record,
garnering a 99-10 total score margin in ten games. In six
games, the Knights scored in double figures, including a
20-goal barrage against Miami of Fla. Leading scorers for
Rudy's team include Pam Baughman (16 goals, 11 assists,
43 pointsX and double-figure goals scorers Nancy Lay
(18), Donna Laboranti (15) and Nancy Buopane (11). Amy
Ford and Lucy Perez-have split time equally in goal for
UCF.
Cincinnati's Lady Bearcats come to Chapel Hill this
weekend bearing the championship of Region V, which
includes the states of Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio
and West Virginia and Michigan. Coach Janet Line's
team outscored its opponents 50-10 and recorded six
shutouts this season. Leading scorer for the Lady Bear
cats is Vicki Niemann with 17 goats. In a regular season
game against second-seeded Missouri-St Louis, the Lady
Bearcats lost 2-1 .
The Colorado College Tigers, coached by Stephen
Paul, survived a rugged Region VII tournament with
schools from Colorado, Wyoming, Utah, Arizona and
New Mexico to make it to the national championship.
CC edged Northern Colorado 4-3 in the semifinals and
defeated Colorado State 3-1 in overtime in the cham
pionship game. Trt-champion of the Rocky Mountain In
tercollegiate Soccer league, Colorado College is led in
scoring by Kathy Ludwig (22 goals, 11 assists, 55 points)
and Rachel Young (14 goals, 13 assists, 55 points). Jan Ja
ramillo also has 12 goals for CC and Robyn Waltz has re
corded a 1.04 against average in the net The Tigers
dropped a 4-0 decision to 10th seeded Texas A&M at
College Station earlier this year.
At Connecticut the Huskies of Coach Len Tsantiris fi
nished second in the Region I (New England and Middle .
Atlantic states) tournament losing a 2-1 overtime deci-
sion to Harvard. But since Region I was guaranteed two
bids, the Huskies earned an automatic berth in the na
tional field. Moira BuckJey is the.Huskie's offensive
sparkplug with 16 goals and 7 assists for 39 points,
The Texas A&M Aggies represent Region VI in this
weekend's tournament They come to Chapel Hill with
an 11-0 record. During the regular season, they defeated
Colorado College, another contender in the tournament.
The Wisconsin Badgers fell to Cincinnati in the. Re
gion V final, but earned an at-large berth because of its
15 wins and high scoring games. Coach Craig Webb's
team is paced by Karen Lunda with 24 goals and 21 as
sists for 69 points.
Tickets to the tournament are $5 for adults and $2.50
for students. A day pass costs $2 for adults and $1 for
students. All tickets must be purchased at the gate. ($)
