Defensive debacle
Warren Martin of the Blue team is double covered by fellow fresh
man John Brownlee and James Worthy. The White squad handled
the Blues 68-47 in the second intersquad basketball game.
By The Associated Press
Rod McSwain blocked a punt for a first-period
touchdown to trigger a Clemson rally and his older
brother, Chuck, ran for a pair of second-half
touchdowns as the second-ranked Tigers defeated South
Carolina, 29-13, Saturday and completed their first
perfect regular season in 33 years. ,
Clemson's defense, ranked 12th in the nation, also set
up an 11 -yard scoring scramble by quarterback Homer
Jordan for a 15-7 halftime lead after Bob Paulling made
up for the first missed extra point of his career with a
23-yard field goal that put the Tigers in front to stay.
After South Carolina closed within 15-13 early in the
third period on a 10-yard pass from Gordon Beckham to
Horace Smith a 2-point conversion try failed when
Beckham was sacked by Jeff Suttle. .
Clemson wrapped up its 12th consecutive victory
when Chuck McSwain leaped across from a yard out
later in the third quarter and bolted 23 yards for a
fourth-quarter score, breaking three tackles along the
way.
, Clemson, bound for the Orange Bowl against
Nebraska, finished the regular season 1 1-0. Only twice
before has Clemson won 1 1 games in a season and those
years, 1948 and 1978, included bowl wins. South
Carolina is 6-5 with one game left and probably could
have gone to the Hall of Fame bowl by beating the
Tigers. . .
Maryland 48 Virginia 7
Tailback Charlie Wysocki ran for 153 yards and four
touchdowns Saturday and Boomer Esiason set a school
single-season passing record as Maryland rolled to a 48-7
victory over Virginia.
Wysocki ran in two first-half touchdowns from 8 and
13 yards as Maryland took a commanding 27-0 lead at
intermission. He scored two more touchdowns in 'the
third quarter on runs of 1 and 2 yards.
Esiason completed 10 of 13 passes for 191 yards, in
cluding a 53-yard- pass to Russell Davis that set up
Wysocki's one-yard TD plunge in the third period.
Esiason completed his 122nd pass of the season to
break the old school record of 121 completions set in
1962 by Dick Shiner.
Virginia, 1-9; did not cross the 50-yard line until late in
the second quarter. The Cavaliers got no closer than the
Maryland 38 in the first half.
Virginia's defense failed to stop Maryland until Tim
Whittie fumbled in the end zone late in the second half.
Early in the first quarter, the Cavaliers stopped the
Terps on the Virginia 10, but were penalized for having
too many players on the field. The penalty enabled the
Terps to score on a one-yard Tun by Whittie.
Mark Sanford scored Virginia's only touchdown in
the third period on a 5-yard pass from Todd Kirtling.
Vernon Garter ran 11 yards for a Maryland
touchdown in the fourth quarter. Jesse Atkinson added
field goals of 38 and 27 yards.
Miami (Fla.) 14
N.C. State 6
Miami's 1 Ith-ranked Hurricanes started Saturday as if
they might blow North Carolina State off the football
map, but the Wolfpack nearly weathered the storm
before bowing 14-6.
"After the first five minutes we never did play well
enough offensively to put the game away," said Miami
coach Howard Schnellenberger.
"It was obvious that we were the dominant team, but
North Carolina State's seniors are to.be commended on
the way they hung in there. If they had been able to
move the ball consistently on offense, it would have been
a much different game."
For North Carolina State head coach Monte Kiffen, it
was the same old story of the past Six weeks his club
played close but came up short.
"It was. a tough loss for us," Kiffen said, "but it's
been that kind of year. But like I told the squad, this was
a team that never would say die. Down 14-0 right off the
bat and after five straight losses, they still didn't quit."
Miami, led by quarterback Jim Kelly, struck for two
touchdowns the first five minutes of play while the Hur
ricane's defense shut down the Wolfpack and made the
early scores stand up for the victory.

Volleyball team takes regional title
From staff reports
The UNC volleyball team earned a shot
at a national title with two thrilling vic
tories in winning the AIAW Region II
tournament in Raleigh over the weekend.
It took come-from-bebind efforts in
both the semifinals and finals to put
Carolina in the national tournament to be '
held in Tallahassee, Fla. Dec. 8-13.
The Heels beat N.C. State in the finals,
15-7, 11-15, 3-15, 15-8, 15-7 Saturday
night.
And they had to win a cliff-hanger to
even get into the final match with State.
The semifinal win, over Eastern Ken
tucky, was by scores of 15-10, 13-15,
12-15, 15-9, 15-6.
Linda Kantz, Donna Meier and Laura
Held were named to the all-tournament
team.
Kantz said the comebacks took a con
siderable team effort.
"I feel like I didn't have that good a
tournament, but the hitters behind me
made me look good," she said. "Those J
guys (teammates) really played great."
Carolina will go into the national tour
nament with a 36-9 record. Hawaii, the
current No. 1 -ranked team, will be the
team to beat in Tallahassee.
Cami Berizzi celebrated her 20th birth
day among friends, both in and out of
water, as the North Carolina women's
swimming and diving team defeated the
University of Tennessee Volunteers,
98-51, in the home season opener Sunday.
The birthday girl finished second in
both the 100-yard backstroke with an
NCAA national qualifying time of 59.13
and the 200-yard backstroke, behind
teammate Sue Walsh, with qualifying
times of 57.90 and 2:07.56, respectively.
Berizzi also led off UNC's winning
400-yard medley relay team, with Janet
Strickland, Barb Harris and Walsh. That
combination finished in a qualifying time
of 3:55.21.
"To have as many national qualifying
times as we did is rare this early in the sea
son," Berizzi said of UNC's six quali
fying performances. The remaining two
were Strickland's 100-yard breaststroke
time of 1:06.21 and Amy Pless 100-yard
individual medley in 59.59.
Divers Janice Dalrymple and Sue Per
fater both qualified for the zone diving
championships as well as the nationals.
Dalrymple scored 168.50 and 246.0 points
in the one-meter events. Perfater scored
159.60 and 241.90. The women finished
1-2 in both events, but reversed positions.
"This was one of the best opening
meets I've ever seen the women have,"
coach Frank Comfort said. "University
of Tennessee's a good team."
UT coach Terry Carlisle, in his second
year, expects to bring the Vols up to the
level of UNC next year through selective
recruiting. He said that is a tall order,
since "North Carolina has a good shot
at the national title this year."
Both the men's and women's teams
will be at Duke today at 7 p.m.
