Summer school doesn't have to be a drag.
True, it's been a mere two weeks since we
agonized through finals and here it is time to
go to classes again. But one way to ease the
pain is to check out the latest album releases
from some familiar and not-so-familiar
names on the rock circuit Here is a guide to
some of the newest of ferings:
music
XTC, English Settlement There are two
versions of this album; one is a two-record
import, the other an abbreviated American
release. The import is far more preferable
since it has five songs not to be found on the
domestic copy. The four-man English group
covers a lot of territory in terms of both style
and content Songs about troubles in subur
bia, political and social conflicts, and the
shortcomings of personal relationships all
share equal time. The music runs the range
from hard rock to ska to pop to tribal
rhythms. There is no one way to categorize
this band. And, after all, who needs to when
they make music this well?
Talking Heads, The Name of This Band Is
Talking Heads This double album retro-
; spective of the group's career captures them
in full flight from their beginnings as a quar
tet in 1977 to the expanded nine-member
"Super Heads" of the present. The band's
uncanny ability to incorporate a variety of
- sounds and styles is well-documented here.
Highlights include David Byrne's hyper-paranoid
singing, Adrian Belew's guitar workouts,
and the soulful back-up vocals of Nona Hen
dryx and Dolette MacDonald. Even though
this is a live album, there is no loss of clarity
or sound, and the band is consistently excel
lent Madness, Complete .Madness These
guys are at the top of the charts in England
but are relatively unknow.i Stateside. This is
unfortunate, because their lively mixture of
ska, irrepressible humor, and witty lyrics is
very good stuff. With luck, this greatest hits
album will expose them to a wider audience.
New releases to watch for: The Clash,
Combat Rock (already on the shelves); Pete
Townshend, Chinese Eyes; King Crimson,
Beat; Adrian Belew, The Lone Rhino. .
