NEWS Em ploy m ent service to operate secon d session From Staff Reports A service to help UNC students find part time jobs both on and off campus will begin operating about July 12, Student Body Presi dent Mike Vandenbergh said this week. The Student Employment Service will co ordinate local job openings with students' job requests, Vandenbergh said. Local busi lesses may list job openings with the service and employment service volunteers will con tact student applicants to tell them about the openings. "The rest is up to the student," he said. Phil Armstrong, director of the employ ment service for the summer, said he had asked the Chapel HillCarrboro Chamber of Commerce to encourage local businesses to list job openings with the service. Not all students will be eligible to apply . . " illppiii : i l W . Students on financial aid, for exam ple, could lose some of their grant money were they to get a job. The ineligibility is "really true of any kind of employment," said Mary Garren, assistant director for unemployment at UNCs Finan cial Aid Office. "We have awarded them (money), then if they come up and get a job after the fact they may have to repay part of their grant. " ; ; Vandenbergh said the financial aid office would be sent a copy of every application for employment and would check to see if the student applying was eligible to get a job without losing financial aid funds. Although the Student Employment Ser vice will be staffed entirely by volunteers, it will present, a substantial cost to Student Government, Vandenbergh said. Most of the costs will be brought on by setting up the of fice and printing up applications and bro chures, he said. Vandenbergh said he planned to spend about a third of his $2,200 Executive Budget on the employment service. He may ask the Campus Governing Council to fund the ser vice this fall, he added. The Student Employment Service will be located in Suite B of the Carolina Union and will operate from 1-4 p.m. Monday through Thursday during summer school. MILTON'S FIRST FATHER'S DAY EXTKAVANZA!
