(AP) Six people-including three from Chapel Hill, N.C who staged an anti-nuclear protest at the Savannah River Plant in May were con victed this week of trespassing there. A federal jury returned the guilt verdict at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, less than an hour after it began its deliberations. The six face maximum fines of $1,000 when they are sentenced later this month. Three protestors walked on a front lawn of the atomic weapons facility's admini stration building May 31 to draw attention to the dangers of nuclear war. Convicted were John Penley, 30, Chris Kueny, 24 and Rosemary Frericks, 26 of Chapel Hill, and Michael Gooding, 22, Mitch Yarborough, 40. and Barbara Smith, 23, all of Columbia. The Savannah River Plant is a Depart ment of Energy facility i that makes plutonium and tritium for nuclear wea pons. The Natural Guard, . an anti-nuclear group, has asked for permission to demon strate on the administration lawn, but were turned down for security reasons. The Orientation Commission has planned several programs for freshmen, including "Carolina Culture Through Music," to be held in the Pit August 19. The show will in clude a reggae band, rock band and possibly a bluegrass band. ; Hunter said the initial plans for the show were to include other performing groups in an effort to show the freshmen the diverse arts of Chapel Hill. But many of the groups, such as the Black Student Movement Gospel Choir and Apple Chill Cloggers, were unable to come. Other programs include a "Nutrition Fair," which will provide information in weight control, diet disorders and nutrition. "We hope to inform the freshmen how to stay healthy on their own," Hunter said. Orientation week will include a Reading Day as it has in the past, but this year all freshmen will be required to be tested. Hunter said, "The reading test will help freshmen decide how many reading courses and what courses they should take." Programs on time management, study skills, personal budget student aid, the undergraduate adacemic environment and career planning will be offered several times in the residence halls, she said. The Orientation Commission had previ ously planned a program on the curriculum, but decided not to present it at the request of the General College. "It wasn't a problem or any confusion just a conflict of interest," Hunter said. "The General College was afraid the program would make freshmen feel pressured to choose a major." In addiiton to attending Orientation activ ities during the week, minority students will attend a pre-orientation program August 14. "The idea of the program is to help minor ities meet other minorities, including a mi nority staff and professors," Hunter said. : The program will also provide information on local services catering to minorities, such as churches and hairdressers, she said. The Orientation Commission was "almost to the pinnacle and hopefully won't fall off," Hunter said. There are a few last minute loose ends we'll have to settle before August 15.", mams ' M iii&S s flifl i bin 'Jtfo&MM. :WOXvmm?
