The fall semester is still young, but
many of UNCs sports clubs are in full
swing. There is a positive feeling among
club members that this will be an ex
cellent year for the club system.
UNCs Cyding Club features a racing
team in addition to leisure biking. Qub
advisor Chip Davis said that the racing
team resulted from a recent nationwide
surge in the popularity of biking and that
the team should add a new, refreshing
dimension to the organization.
"Cycling has become big in North
Carolina,' Davis said. "There are already
four designated bike routes crossing the
state."
The racing team meets daily at the
Happy Store, usually conducting time
trials. Every Sunday at 10 a.m., the club
meets at Carr Mill Mall to. depart on
25-50 mile rides. Anyone may participate.
Next Wednesday, Sept. 15, the club
will meet in Greenlaw 101 for a
30-minute film on the Coors Classic, the
largest cycling race in the country. On
Sunday, Sept. 26, the club will field a
team for the Carolina Cup, the biggest
race in the state, to be held in
Greensboro.
This year's Rugby Club "has many new
faces, but Dave McSpadden, club presi
dent, feels it has the potential to defend
the state championship they earned last
year.
"We are a very diverse group,"
McSpadden said, referring to the large
foreign membership on the squad, "but
that's what makes it fun."
McSpadden said that 35-40 men turned
out for the fall season. In order to give
everyone an equal chance to play, the
club has been divided into three squads.
The season opens Sunday, Sept. 19,
against N.C. State on Ehringhaus Field at
1 p.m. The club practices on Tuesdays
and Thursdays at 5:30 p.m.
dub Football begins another 10-game
schedule this Sunday against Richmond
on Navy Field at 1 p.m. This year, over
30 players suited up.
"We have a lot of experience and can
possibly even win the conference," club
President D.C. Taylor said,
Last year's squad posted a 5t5 record
and lost to Duke in the league champion
ship game.
The men's Soccer dab opens its first
season of action Sunday, Sept. 12, at 4
p.m. on Carmichael fields 3 and 4. . '
Qub President Larry Goodson said
that 30-35 players have turned out so far,
but he encouraged others to try out as
well.
"We feel very positive about our
chances because we have a great deal of
guys who have played on other area soc
cer clubs," Goodson said.
The club practices on Ehringhaus Field
Tuesdays at 4 p.m. and Fridays at 6 p.m.
Other club notes: ,
Bassmasters, a club for fishing en
thusiasts, has 12 to 15 members and en
courages others to fish with them every
Friday on University Lake. . . .
Water polo practices Monday and
Wednesday nights, and will be gearing up
soon for its first official tournament of the
year, Oct. 8 and 9. Due to a large gradua
tion of team members last spring, the club
has many new faces this fall. ... .
Women's volleyball will soon be gear
ing up for the season. Club president
Sylvia Sutton hopes to form both a begin
ner and an advanced teanvif turnout is
good...
More information on these and other
clubs will be available in the Pit Monday,
Sept. 13, at the Sportsmart, sponsored by
the Sports Qub Council.
Basketball tryouts
slated for Monday
Those interested in trying out for the
UNC women's basketball team should at
tend an organizational meeting and
workout Monday, Sept. 13 from 5:30 to 7
p.m. in Carmichael Auditorium. Posi
tions for team managers, scorekeepers
and statisticians will also be discussed.

NCAA investigates Clemson QB
'. The Associated Press
GREENVILLE, S.C. The NCAA
has questioned several people in connec
tion with Clemson University quarterback
Homer Jordan's recent purchase of an
automobile, the Greenville News reported
today.
The newspaper, in a copyrighted story,
said NCAA investigators have questioned
Jordan's mother, Mrs. Alice Jordan, and
Gene Tollison, an Easley, S.C,
businessman, about the automobile.
The NCAA has been investigating
recruiting practices at Clemson for several
months, but results of the inquiry have not
been released. Jordan is the first player
whose name has surfaced in connection
with any NCAA probe. .
Tollison, who said Jordan worked for
him several weeks last spring at Blue Ridge
Tool and Machine Co. in Easley, said an
investigator asked him if he had given the
athlete financial assistance to buy a car.
Tollison said he had not and had not aided
any other player in purchasing an
automobile. ;
NCAA rules prohibits gifts to college
athletes. . .-
Tollison said he denied a request by the
investigator to see his bank records for the
past three years. He said he "would not
show those to anyone."
Mrs. Jordan said she was involved in the
financing of the car her son bought.
Tollison said he had received one visit
from the NCAA investigator and had
several telephone calls that he considered
harassment.

North Carolina's field hockey team
begins its 1982 schedule with a ; full
weekend on the road, beginning with an
exhibition game against Massachusetts to
day and culminating in the Husky Classic
at Storrs, Conn., on Saturday and Sun
day. Coach Karen Shelton makes "it clear
that this year's team has its work cut out.
By season's end on Nov. 7, the Tar Heels
will have played the top six teams in the
nation. With only two seniors on the
roster, Shelter said she believes that the
level of competition the young team will
face will pay dividends in the future.
The team will concentrate on defense
and ball control, utilizing a small passing
game. Expected to contribute heavily on
offense are Kim and Jamie Knicker
bocker, Connie Walter and Mary
Sentementes, last year's leading scorer.
The defense will be anchored by Meg
Wanser, Brenda Reed, Alison Segar and
talented goalie Jan Miles.
UNC will face Northwestern Saturday
in the first round of the Husky Classic.
Northwestern was ranked 19th in the
final 1981 coaches' poll. The host team,
defending NCAA champion Connecticut,
will take on Vermont in the second game.
The consolation and championship games
are slated for Sunday.
Shelton views this weekend's tourna
ment as a learning experience more than
anything else. "Our young players are
very aggressive and eager to play," she
said. "They will have the opportunity to
play some of the nation's best teams and
learn a great deal. We have nothing to
lose and everything to gain."
