Wednesday, October 13, 1982The Daily Tar Heel7 UNC takes 11th at Indiana Sparrow 1 flies off path; Crum glad to he alive after escaping Wdlce By LINDA ROBERTSON Sports Editor Figuratively speaking, the Wake Forest Demon Deacons have quite an oxymoron for a nickname. And though they were charitable toward the UNC football team on several occasions Saturday, the Deacs came fiendishly close to pulling off an upset. Head coach Dick Crum pro phesized as much. "I hate to say I told you so," Crum began his press conference Tuesday, 'but whenever Wake plays Carolina we get their best effort. The game was just about what I thought it would be. If someone told me last week that we were going to win 24-7, 1 would've said I'll take it.' Crum also had lots of praise for Wake quarterback Gary Schofield, who kept the game close despite a sub-par 17-of-41 passing performance. "Schofield is the best quarterback we've played against this season," he said. "It takes an excellent youngster to stay in there and take that kind of beating." The Tar Heels were battered as well. Center Steve McGrew underwent surgery Sunday for torn knee ligaments and is out for the year. Dave Drechsler reinjured his ankle and "probably won't play" against N.C. State Saturday, Crum said. Brian Johnston, a sophomore from Highland, Md., who was a backup at de fensive tackle, will take over for McGrew. "Originally, if McGrew went down, , Drechsler would have played center. But with Drechsler out, that necessitated Women's X-country B-team to run in state meet Thursday By KATHY NORCROSS Staff Writer The combination of natural talent, hard work and dedication has begun to pay off. For the first time ever, Carolina's women's cross country team is ranked in the nation's-top 20, at No. 17 overall. The women's B team, consisting of Kathy Flaherty, Gadyn Garrett, Sharyn Gates, EUyn Lockerbie, Lisa Miller, Holly Neckerman, Kathy ;:, Stetson, .Christine Swardson, Crystal Thorpe, and Pain Weber will race Thursday in the N.C. State Cross Country Championships to be held at N.C. State. . "The meet is basically another race be tween State and UNC," Coach Lockerbie said. The top eight women the A team will have two other opportunities to run against State, once at the ACC Champion ships and again the District Qualifiers, so the B team will race State this week. across 27 Farm birds 23 Deadly 23 Sin 31 Uzdr.z mc"usks 33 Slmpto ona 35 Fell to . tiavelep 33 Facial - features 33 Org. 33 Psycho therapist, Coua 43 AkJ Attractive 47 Miliary Croups: abbr. 1 Legators . Brian has experience at center end he's the next best available athlete at that position. He'll just have to get that rust knocked off." Crum has a wait-and-see attitude about quarterback Rod Elldns' condition. "He's been running around in practice with no limp but the doctors must evaluate how much stress he can put on the knee before he plays again," Crum said. "Scott (Stankavage) has done a nice job and threw the ball with extreme ac curacy Saturday." Crum is also content to remain flexible about his trio of outstanding tailbacks Kelvin Bryant; expected to start for the first time in four weeks Saturday, Ethan Horton and Tyrone Anthony. "We have a little different philosophy at tailback," Crum said. "We've got some pretty good youngsters and we're going to utilize them. Really, with the defense we play against, you can't ask a tailback to run the ball 35 to 40 times. I'd like to suit you up and let WEisrn Fuller or Chris Ward hit you and then you'd understand how a tailback feels Sunday morning." Against N.C. State, Crum said he an ticipated an offense as explosive as his own, with quarterback Tol Avery and tailback Joe Mcintosh the most dan gerous components. "State has a two-pronged attack," Crum said. "Avery always plays well against us and Mcintosh is healthy again. He had 106 yards against us last year." Lockerbie explained that the B team would like to make a good showing; the meet will give good racing experience, and will help the women get used to pressure. "I really believe that these girls can finish second or third," Lockerbie stated. As the B team races this Thursday, the A team will continue to prepare for Sun day when they will run in Charlottesville, Va., in a meet against No. 1 Virginia, No. 16 Penn State, and the No. 1 club team, Athletics West; 'which IT sponsored by " NIKE in Oregon. The top eight women on the team, Joan Nesbit, Holly Murray, Madhn Morreale, Kemper Knight, Valerie Roback, Laura Whitney, Katie Merten and Bridget Thompson will compete this weekend, j Virginia has an extremely difficult course; it may be the most difficult in the South. He may be just as lost as you. Glenn Sparrow is painfully aware of that. Sparrow, North Carolina's top run ner, was a step behind Oemson's Hans Koeleman, who was in first place in Satur day's Indiana Invitational at Bloomington. With two-thirds of the race completed, both runners had a 40-yard lead over the next man. Then Koeleman, reading a sign, took a right turn. ' v He read the sign wrong. And Sparrow followed. The mistake proved disastrous for both runners. By the time they got back on the course, their 40-yard lead had turned into an 80-yard deficit, as 12 runners had taken advantage of their unintended detour. Sparrow claimed that he and Koeleman had merely followed the signs. "It was a confusing part of the course," he said. "It was marked really well, but the sign was pointing to the right and we went that way." After just 300 yards though, Koeleman was once again in front of the pack with Sparrow right behind him. Taking the wrong turn had taken a lot' out of them, though, and eventually they were passed again. Koeleman missed yet another turn, but made a great comeback and finished fifth. But Sparrow didn't have anything left for the final kick and wound up 11th. As a team, UNC finished 1 1th out of 22 teams. Wisconsin won the race, East Term. State was second and Marquette was third. CJemson UNCs only con ference rival at the race, took fifth. Coach Don Lockerbie left Indiana feel ing satisfied. Mike Kominsky ran his best race ever, finishing second for the Tar Heels and 42nd overall. Jeff Hyman also rah his best race, placing 53rd. And Jack Morgan finished very strong, passing 28 runners in the last two miles. But even after taking a roundabout route that took him out of the pack, the individual spotlight for UNC belonged to Sparrow. "We really didn't know how good he was," Lockerbie said. "But he lived up to his status as an ail-American candidate." h of Dsms DEFECTS FOUDJtQ;i f LIFE 15 FULL A 0F byGrryTrudccu I'M HAW A i&jrsp&VMtipn CtVf$ASHAF&! m my coins JUST r rujf w 14 1 list !:ORE 1 S r --7 " . v y'r' ssr 1 w ,
