Toto walks away with six awards
at their first Grammy ceremony
The Associated Press
LOS ANGELES The easy-rock band
Toto captured six Grammys on Wednes
day night, including record of the year for
Rosanna, while E.T. composer John
Williams added three to his collection as
the record industry's top trophy celebrated
its 25th anniversary.
Men at Work, the New Wave quintet
from Australia that scored with its
Business as Usual album, was voted best
new artist of the year, just after singing the
hit song from the album, "Down Under."
Pat Benatar won her third straight
Grammy for best female rock vocal with
"Shadows of the Night."
Melissa Manchester wotffor best female
pop vocal with "You Should Hear How
She Talks About You," and Alabama
picked up a Grammy with "Mountain
Music," best country vocal by a group.
Both were first-time winners.
"I'm still waiting for someone to take
this back and say, 'We've made a
mistake,' " Manchester told reporters
backstage.
All six members of the San Fernando
Valley ensemble Toto strode onstage,
whooping and hollering as they accepted
the record of the year award for Rosanna,
the hit single from their Toto IV album.
David Paich thanked the academy for the
group's first Grammys ever and the father
of his fellow band members Jeff, Steve
and Mike Porcaro for "letting the band
play in his garage."
Men at Work's Colin Hay, asked
backstage why he thought the bmH had
caught on so quickly in the United States,
said: "We came out with something at the
right time, I think. People in America were
ready for something different."
Joe Cocker and Jennifer Warnes took
best pop vocal by a duo for "Up Where
We Belong," an Oscar-nominated song
from the film An Officer and a Gentle
man. Warnes, a veteran country-pop singer,
said she decided to team up with Cocker
after hearing the British singer's rousing
performance with the Crusaders at last
year's Grammys.
She said her boyfriend compared the
partnership to "Guinevere and the old
troll under the bridge," but they cut the
award-winning song in one day at the
studio.
The top awards were presented at a na
tionally televised show emceed by John
Denver and produced with a lavishness
that belied the troubled economic times on
which the industry has fallen. The three
hour show was studded with star per
formers like opera star Leontyne Price,
singers Lena Home and Ray Charles and
comedian Eddie Murphy.
Toto was honored as producer of the
year, and Rosanna, besides record of the
year, earned awards for instrumental ar
rangement for vocals and vocal arrange
ment. The album was named best engi
neered recording, and Toto guitarist Steve
Lukather shared a best rhythm and blues
song Grammy with Jay Graydon and Bill
Champlin for "Turn Your Love
Around."
