travelers a year. -
Heatherly also mentioned such places ?5 Mt. Mitchell

According ,to fcalculations by engi
neers at the Johnson Space Center, the
Soviets could have rendezvoused at
about 9:20 a.m. EST Thursday. The
docking was expected by experts to fol

to move aboard the large Salyut.
NEW CONCORD, Ohio In a
high school that bears his name,
Democratic Sen. John H. Glenn de
clared his presidential candidacy on
Thursday and vowed to push for an
immediate freeze on nuclear weapons,
repeal of future tax cuts and a return to
"the simple values we learned in this
small town."
Glenn became the sixth Democrat to
formally announce a bid for the White
House. Polls within the party rank him
second behind former Vice President
Walter F. Mondale in the race for the
nomination in San Francisco next year. .
Some national surveys have indicat
ed both Mondale and Glenn could beat
President Reagan if the election were
imminent.
Standing in the packed auditorium
of ' John Glenn High School, the
61-year-old former astronaut, the first
American to orbit the Earth, recalled
his youth in this southern Ohio com
munity of 1,800 people and his pride
that its young people "could aspire to
anything."
