POETS Intramurals finish first session By JEFF BRODY Tar Heel Staff Writer The final results are in for Intramural golf, frisbee golf and marathon softball. The play offs for the two major sports, softball and basketball, have been pushed into the last week of classes, however. Of the eight sports offered during the first session of summer school softball, basket ball, tennis, racquetball, marathon softball, medal play golf, frisbee golf and volleyball triples four sports have been championed. Because of an experienced increase in par ticipation this year with 39 softball teams and 28 basketball teams, the playoffs for these sports have been delayed. The racquetball and tennis finals have also been pushed to this week because of an unexpected large number of entrants. The individual golf tournament was played at Finley Golf Course. Dick Coop won the low gross championship with a score of 74. Pat Earley and Carl Henley tied for the champion ship in the low net score category with a 72. The difference between the two categories is that the gross score is a raw score, whereas the net score is determined by using the Calloway Handicap System which takes into account a golfer's normal handicap. Dr. Ed Shields, the director of the Intramu ral program, said that the two categories made the golf tournament more equitable. "The two types of scores are used so that everyone is given an equal chance to win," Shields said. The frisbee golf championship, played last Friday, was won by John Glass. Glass defeated Ron Swans trom on an 18-hole course designed to hit specific targets by a score of 63-85. The softball marathon featured five teams that played for 24 hours until a winner was determined. On June 20, the day of the mara thon, there were three teams tied for first place. A playoff was held and the Quantum Ducks team won. On July 7 the second summer session Intra mural activities will begin sign-up. The second session activities include: softball, volleyball, tennis, racquetball, golf, basketball, ultimate frisbee, and ultimate croquet. In addition, there will be a co-ed sunbathing contest which will be announced by the IM office. Dr. Shields suggests that students who plan to attend the second summer session begin thinking about the intramural sports they would like to play. "It is important for people that want to participate to sign up early be cause the summer goes by quicker and sign ups are sooner," he said. r Cheaper by the dozen Your 13th wash is FREE omBT.r.
