Student Activities Center moving along as planned
By JANET OLSEN
Staff Writer
Along Manning Drive behind Hinton James Resi
dence Hall, the new Student Activities Center is begin
ning to rise from the depths of red clay.
But the birth of the center hasn't seen the death of
the controversy over the location of student seating for
basketball games.
Athletic Director John D. Swofford said the SAC
Steering Committee has attempted to alleviate some
student complaints over the proposed seating by
reserving seating in one corner, equalling about one
, third of the seating in the complex, exclusively for
students. '
Student sections previously were planned for two
separate parts of the arena.
Swofford said the Stccrinc remittee is studying
other, student complaints about SAC seating.
"Currently, students have asked for more side-court
seating, and the committee is working to resolve the
problem," he said.
About 8,500 student tickets will be issued per game
in the SAC compared to the 3,600 issued per game in
Carmichael Auditorium. The SAC will hold a total of
22,000 spectators.
Workers are currently building the seating structure
and will begin putting up steel girders for the roof in
about three weeks, Swofford said.
Completion of the SAC is set for February 1985.
The SAC will cost an estimated $30 million, all of
which will be raised through private donations. The
Athletic Association and the Educational Foundation
alumni organization are responsible for fund raising.
To date, $28.4 million has been pledged to the SAC
building effort. Most of the money has come from
Educational Foundation members, Swofford said.
"The Educational Foundation's involvement is pri
marily for fund raising," he said. "But they do have
more involvement than normal because of the large
scale of the fund-raising effort."
Contributors, who number more than 2,000, repre
sent a variety of backgrounds, Swofford said.
"They range from people who are able to give a
considerable amount in a lump sum to average work
ing Americans to kids who love Carolina basketball,"
he said.
Along with the 22,000-seat arena, the SAC will in
clude a 1,300-seat Olympic swimming center. '
But Swofford said the primary need for the facility
generated from the amount of interest in Carolina
basketball and that basketball is the primary focus of
the fund raising.
The SAC also will be used for free play and general
recreation, including intramurals and physical educa
tion classes. It will contain the offices, of the athletic
director, the Educational Foundation, men's and
women's basketball and swimming and ticket sales.
Once the SAC is completed, Carmichael Audi
torium will continue to house non-revenue sports pro
grams such as volleyball, fencing and gymnastics. The
new facility will allow coaches and staff currently stuf
fed in closet-like offices in Carmichael to move into
larger areas in the building. !
i ' .
The Student Activities Center is a progressive step
for the University, Swofford said.
"It will be a facility that will in one way or another
benefit every student," Swofford said. "Regardless of
their athletic involvment, students will get a lot out of
it, recreationally, culturally and socially."
