You can take the Tar Heel out of the country, but you can't
take the country out of a Tar Heel. There is an entire crop of
students who were raised on Southern cooking, and encoun
tering campus food can be the closest thing to trauma as any-'
thing they will face.
"What? No collard greens?" was heard from one disap
pointed freshman in line for another ARA meal.
However, there is hope for those who are looking for a good
home-cooked meal but can't afford the ride home three times
a day.
The kitchen at home probably doesn't have a Ms. Pac Man
machine, and it more than likely isn't smoke-filled. But, for a
restaurant that captures the short-order home cooking for
which your Mom deserves a medal, A&J Bar-B-Q is a good
place to start.
Located approximately a block off West Franklin Street at
1 15 North Graham, A&J has a full menu of spaghetti, chicken
and vegetables, along with side orders just like Mom used to
whip up out of thin air.
A&J's specialty is barbecue, and it is said to be some of the
best in Orange County. You can judge that for yourself and
when you do you'll get enough vegetables for a balanced meal
that even the most particular mother would appreciate. A&J,
which is open until 9 p.m., doesn't take checks, but then
neither did Mom. This restaurant is a must-try before you
graduate.

Garden fresh vegetables and home-cooked meals are specialities at Dip's "Country Kitchen.
For another taste of the next best thing to Mom's, try
Brady's. Located at 1505 E. Franklin St., Brady's specializes in
deep-fried Southern delicacies, such as chicken, fish and hush
puppies. It serves a variety of meats, including pork chops and
steaks, and is well-known for its barbecue.
The best thing about Brady's is the price, perhaps one of the
main reasons Brady's has been a UNC institution for years.
Did you ever marvel over how Mom managed to make din
ner for the whole family with no mixes or prepackaged ingredi
ents? Dip's Country Kitchen, 405 West Rosemary St., can and
does boast the same feat. Vegetables are garden-fresh and
everything is made from scratch.
Entrees include barbecue, seafood, cornbread, muffins and
even chitterlings. Bring a healthy appetite because the portions
are home-style, and the price is right.
Last, but not least is a campus tradition Mom and Dad
probably recommended when they sent you here The Port
hole. At the Porthole you fill out your own ticket, but from then
on, the service is non-stop. Waiters bring generous refills on
drinks and The Porthole's famous rolls.
The food is, without a doubt, the best for the price, and The
Porthole is within easy walking distance from campus. Located
in Old Fraternity Row (near the new Art Building), The Port
hole may be just the place you are looking for.
