UNC's non-conference matdiups not made in heaven By FRANK KENNEDY Assistant Sports Editor When Tar Heel fans pack Kenan Stadium the next three weekends, they won't be coming to see matchups made in heaven. Nor will they be there to see a close, down-to-the-wire thril ler. Fact is, the opposition on those weekends just won't be that strong. To make matters apparently worse, these three opponents are non-conference foes, and the final scores can do nothing toward earning an ACC championship. No matter, for here is a look at the year's remaining nonconference opposition for North Carolina. MEMPHIS STATE Who can figure this team? The Tigers have had one big problem the past few years: they can't seem to win football games. In 1982, coach Rex Dockery's squad won only one of 1 1 games, and scored more than 10 points on only one occasion. To top that off, Dockery's best seven running backs to this less-than-dynamic attack all graduated. Moreover, several starters sustained knee in juries earlier this year and some missed spring practice. Yet, this team entering November 1982 with the nation's longest loosing streak (26), has won two straight games. The Tigers defeated Arkansas State 12-0 in the 1982 finale, and last week ran all over Mississippi, 37-17. This was supposed to be a team with zero offense and not too much hope on defense. So, when the Tigers come into Chapel Hill Saturday, don't be surprised at anything that happens. MIAMI (OHIO) Expect a tougher effort from the Redskins under new coach Tim Rose. Dick Cram and N,C State's Tom Reed are two of the most recent Miami mentors. The pre-season picks to win the Mid American Conference, the Redskins return two of the MAC's better players, tailback Jay Peterson and nose guard Brian Pillman. Peter son rushed for 1,157 yards and eight touch downs in '82, and caught 21 passes for 172 yards. Pillman, meanwhile, was a terror on de fense, making 72 tackles, 25 of which resulted in minus 119 yards for the opposition. Quarterback John Appold is fairly profi cient, hitting on 54 percent of his pass at tempts. WILLIAM & MARY The Indians will be going to the air this year, and appear to be a good bet to top last year's dismal 3-8 season. Coach Jimmye Lay cock has 16 starters coming back to an outfit that was able to put points on the board but couldn't help but give up a lot more to the Op position. Among the 10 offensive returners is quarter back Stan Yagiello, the best QB in the state of Virginia last year. Yagiello hit 57,6 percent (166 of 288) of his passes, and averaged nearly 200 yards per game through the air. Of course, in all fairness to Yagiello, he didn't exactly do that against powerhouse teams. The rushing game appears to be a problem, averaging only 89.5 yards per outing last fall. Returning in the backfield are junior Dave Scanlon and senior Bernie Marrazzo, both of whom are earning the praises of the Indian coaches. The entire offensive front remains firmly intact, and that should at least help bol ster the pre-game rushing numbers.
