Sports Parseghian justifies Tar Heels' ranking From staff reports While one of the wire-service polls has wavered as to the relative status of North Carolina among the nation's best and UNC coach Dick Crum's specificity in ranking his own team puts the Tar Heels "somewhere in the top 25," Ara Par seghian doesn't hesitate to defend his pre season selection of UNC as the NCAA's best team in 1983. The former . Notre Dame coach and current CBS college football analyst was in town Tuesday to film a segment on North Carolina's 5-2 defense. The seg ment airs Saturday at noon on the NCAA Today show, which Parseghian co-hosts with Brent Musburger. "I think North Carolina is probably one of the most underrated teams na tionally," Parseghian said after Crum's weekly press conference in Kenan Field house. He said he'd covered enough of the Tar Heels' games in the past few years to know they were talented, but it was their postseason success that impressed him most. "They've had winning seasons," Par seghian said. "But more importantly, when they've gone forward into the bowl games they've beaten top-caliber teams year after year." Parseghian noted that North Carolina had beaten Michigan, Texas, Arkansas and Texas again in its four consecutive bowl appearances, since Crum's second year at UNC in 1979. "When you look at Carolina's bowl record, especially since Dick Cram has been here, you've got to take your hat off to them," he said. - 1 ::-.., - :: - TZZ iWWiwnal li... llTi mil... n iiiwftwinnif irmiiWHffl Wednesday, September 28. 1983The Daily Tar Heel5 Stankavage shares honors From staff and wire reports North Carolina quarterback Scott Stankavage and Virginia wide receiver Billy Smith were named Atlantic Coast Conference offensive players of the week, the league announced Tuesday.
