2The Daily Tar HeelThursday, March 22, 1984 Reagan drops Mideast missile plans Illinois win boosts Mondale over Hart The Associated Press WASHINGTON President Reagan, bowing to congressional pressure has abandoned plans to equip Jordan and Saudi Arabia with Stinger hand-held an tiaircraft missiles, but may be able to salvage a stripped-down strike force to protect the Persian Gulf. The decision, made by Reagan on Tuesday night, represents a defeat for the administration. Personally committed to the purchases, Reagan wanted to demonstrate U.S. support for two Arab countries he is counting on to further peace efforts in the Middle East. , But 55 senators had signed a letter of disapproval prepared by Sen. Robert Packwood, R-Ore., and opponents of the missiles deals apeared capable of muster ing a majority in the House. "There was increasing opposition, no doubt about it," said White House spokesman Larry Speakes. Sources told The Associated Press that Congress agreed that opposition to a con troversial, U.S.-trained and equipped Jordanian strike force would be soft pedaled. In return, the administration agreed to strike all shoulder-fired Stingers 58 of them from the $220 million rapid deployment force deal with Jordan. Those weapons were apart from the 1 ,613 of the bazooka-like missiles and 315 laun chers Reagan had earmarked for sale to the Arab kingdom for $135 million. The administration also agreed to drop the projected purchase by Saudi Arabia of 1,200 Stingers and 400 launchers for $141 million. From Associated Press reports WASHINGTON Walter Mondale has piled up a. big lead over Gary Hart in the contest for national convention delegates who will choose the Democratic presidential nominee. The former vice president's victory Tuesday in the Illinois primary gave him another 97 delegates for a total of 626 so far in the campaign. Hart, with 39 in Illinois, now has 351. The Rev. Jesse Jackson has 130 delegates. Meese controversy continues WASHINGTON The controver- Hospitals in trouble Mews In Brief sies surrounding the nomination of'Ed win Meese III as attorney general spawned another congressional probe Wednesday. Rep. Patricia Schroeder, D-Colo., announced that her House civil service subcommittee is looking into the cir cumstances under which the wife of a Meese benefactor obtained her job with a government agency in San Francisco. ; ' RALEIGH North Carolina could lose 25 to 50 of its less efficient hospitals in the next few years because of changes in health-care financing and fewer pa tients, a UNC researcher said Wednes day. I. Glenn Wilson, UNC chairman of social and adminstrative medicine, told a legislative committee that the most vulnerable hospitals will be those with fewer than 100 beds. .
