Michael Burch, assistant secretary, of defense for public affairs, said in a news briefing that the ships escorting the Kitty Hawk lost contact with the Soviet Victor-class sub before the Wednesday collision in the Sea of Japan. Navy spokesman Lieutenant Com mander John Woodhouse disagreed, saying that the sonar contact was deliberately broken about two hours before the incident. "It is not necessary in an exercise to maintain 24-hour-a-day contact," Woodhouse said. "...We know they are there and they know we know they are there." Burch also disclosed at the briefing that the Kitty Hawk had suffered some damage. An underwater fuel tank containing aircraft fuel had been breached and the fuel mixed with sea water. There was no change in the Pentagon's report that there were no casualties among , the Kitty Hawk's 5,000 man crew.
