WASHINGTON Edwin Meese III asked Thursday
for the appointment of a special prosecutor to make a
"rapid, impartial and thorough" investigation into the
charges of political and financial improprieties that
jeopardize his prospect of becoming attorney general.
President Reagan said he has full confidence in "my
trusted colleague for 17 years" and that Meese would re
main on duty as presidential counselor while the pro
secutor investigates a process that could take months
and throw the issue into the midst of the election cam
paign. Meese said he was sure he would be cleared of "the
misrepresentations and baseless charges which have been
raised in this political year by those who oppose my
nomination."

in Reagan's re-election campaign, was considered certain
to abide by Meese's request and ask a three-judge panel
to select the special prosecutor, or "independent
counsel."
Under the Watergate-spawned Ethics in Government
Act of 1978, the prosecutor will be empowered to name a
staff, take sworn testimony and subpoena documents.
Meese's chief critic, Sen. Howard Metzenbaum,
D-Ohio, called on Reagan to withdraw the nomination
without waiting for the prosecutor's findings.
"The continuation of this matter only hurts people's
confidence in their own government," he said.
Meese said he wanted "all allegations" investigated.
That would cover the political jobs given six people who
helped him financially as well as Meese's role, if any, in
the receipt of papers purloined from the files of fprmer
President Jimmy Carter during the 1980 presidential

As a result Deener foresees rapid growth
in the computer industry. "The whole
computer industry has compounded at. a
rate greater than 20 percent per year. We
think that IBM, which is now a $40
billion business, will be worth $100 billion
by 1990."
Witte said changes in public attitudes
will be necessary for people to adapt to
the increasing use of computers.
"The computer revolution has both
good and bad points," she said. "The
new technology is something you have to
come to grips with. In the future there

In addition, the prosecutor could look into the latest
revelation Meese's failure to pay income taxes on
several hundred dollars' worth of interest on his savings
in the White House Federal Credit Union.
A White House official, who asked not to be iden
tified, said Meese would file amended tax returns for
1981 and 1982. Larry Speakes, the White House spokes
man, said he assumed that would be done.
The investigation will delay the resumption of Senate
confirmation hearings by months- and sharpen a
developing political issue.
On Sunday, Meese announced that Smith was starting
a preliminary inquiry to see if a special prosecutor was
needed. Under the ethics law, Smith had to seek the ap
pointment of a prosecutor unless he found the allega
tions concerning Meese to be frivolous.

Hawk was under sonar surveillance at
the time of the collision.
Michael Burch, assistant secretary,
of defense for public affairs, said in a
news briefing that the ships escorting
the Kitty Hawk lost contact with the
Soviet Victor-class sub before the
Wednesday collision in the Sea of
Japan.
Navy spokesman Lieutenant Com
mander John Woodhouse disagreed,
saying that the sonar contact was
deliberately broken about two hours
before the incident.
"It is not necessary in an exercise to
maintain 24-hour-a-day contact,"
Woodhouse said. "...We know they
are there and they know we know they
are there."
Burch also disclosed at the briefing
that the Kitty Hawk had suffered
some damage. An underwater fuel
tank containing aircraft fuel had been
breached and the fuel mixed with sea
water. There was no change in the
Pentagon's report that there were no
casualties among , the Kitty Hawk's
5,000 man crew.

Alliance were holding a rally in the
town square when they clashed with

parading through the city. Members
of the rightist National Conciliation
Party were also involved. Residents
said that one Christian Democrat was
hospitalized with a gunshot wound to
the head and that several others were
stabbed or beaten.
Two convicted of rape
FALL RIVER, Mass. - A jury
Thursday convicted two of four men
charged with aggravated rape in the
case of a woman who was gang-raped
on a barroom pool table while spec
tators cheered.
The other two were acquitted of all
charges.
The jury convicted Victor Raposo
and John Cordeiro of aggravated rape
and acquitted Virgilio Medeiros and
Jose Medeiros. Neither of the
Medeiros had been implicated in the
attack. Instead, witnesses had testified
that the two tried to interfere with ef
forts to stop or report the rape. The
two Medeiros men are not related.
N.C. unemployment drops
RALEIGH North .Carolina's
unemployment rate dropped one-half
of one percent in February according
to figures released Thursday by the
Employment Security Commission.
The statewide rate decreased from
8.1 percent in January to February's
7.6 percent.
In February 1983, 333,900 people
were unemployed across the state. The
present rate puts unemployment at
222,100.,
