Hart defeats Mod dale in Connecticut

HARTFORD, Conn. Sen. Gary
Hart cemented a six-state sweep of New
England by easily defeating Walter F.
Mondale Tuesday in the Connecticut
Democratic presidential primary
prelude to next week's showdown in
neighboring New York.
The Rev. Jesse Jackson was running a
distant third.
Network interviews indicated Hart, a
second-term senator from Colorado,
polled strongly across the state, especially
among younger voters, college graduates,
and professionals.
With 52 delegates to the Democratic
National Convention at stake, Connec

unemployment, high tech businesses,
suburbanites, commuters. It's a state
designed for Hart."
Alderman said that in contrast with
previous primaries this year, relatively
few voters in Connecticut made up their
minds in the last few days before the
balloting.
Hart worked harder in Connecticut
than his rivals, hoping to slow Mondale's
comeback and to cut the former vice
president's lead in national convention
delegates.
Mondale, in the unusual position of
seeing Hart better organized from the
start, devoted little time and few
resources to Connecticut as he looked
ahead to primaries in New York and
Pennsylvania over the next two weeks.
Jackson hoped to do well enough in
the urban areas of Bridgeport, New
Haven and Hartford to pick up a few
nominating delegates. CBS said its exit
poll showed he was picking up three
quarters of the black vote.
Jackson campaigned in the state on
Sunday and Monday in the regions where
he hoped to do well.

MIAMI A Piedmont Aviation
jet hijacked to Havana Tuesday
returned to its original destination
after Cuban authorities took the three
hijackers into custody.
Flight 451 was bound to Miami
from Newark, N.J. by way of
Charlotte and Charleston, S.C. when
it was hijacked at 3:43 p.m. It landed
in Havana at 4:20 p.m. The hijackers
had demanded a $5 million ransom
for the 57 people aboard.
The hijacking was the 12th such in
cident since may 1. The Cuban
government has indicated that it will
deal harshly with hijackers. "These
people face long prison sentences in
Cuba," said Federal Aviation Ad
ministration spokesman Jack Barker.
The jet returned to Miami, arrivine
just before 7 p.m. Past Cuban policy
is to quickly release hijacked aircraft,
crews and passengers.
